LUCIE COUNTY, FLORIDA WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida, has made the following determinations: 1. Nearly 800,000 people in the United States have a stroke every year, with about three in four being first time strokes. 2. Stroke is the fifth leading cause of death in the United States, killing 130,000 people a year (128,978). That's one in every twenty deaths. Every four minutes, someone dies of a stroke. 3. Stroke is a leading cause of long-term disability and the leading preventable cause of disability. 4. More women than men have strokes each year, in part because women live longer. 5. Estimates of the overall annual incidence of stroke in US children are 6.4 per 100,000 children (0 to 15 years), with approximately half being hemorrhagic strokes. 6. 87% of strokes are classified as ischemic. An ischemic stroke occurs when a clot or a mass blocks a blood vessel, cutting off blood flow to a part of the brain. 7. Rehabilitation is probably one of the most important phases of recovery for many stroke survivors. The effects of stroke may mean that you must change, relearn or redefine how you live. Stroke rehabilitation helps you return to independent living. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida: 1. This Board does hereby proclaim the month of May 2017 as "AMERICAN STROKE MONTH" in St. Lucie County, Florida and encourages all residents and visitors in St. Lucie County to familiarize themselves with the risk factors associated with stroke, recognize the warning signs and symptoms, and on first sign of a stroke dial 9-1-1 immediately so that we might begin to reduce the devastating effects of stroke on our population. PASSED AND DULY ADOPTED this 16th day of May 2017. ATTEST: BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS ST. LUCIE COUNTY RIDA BY: CHAIRMAN APPROVED AS G F AND CORRECT' COUNTY ATTO
