A RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING THE NATIONAL EATING DISORDERS ASSOCIATION AND
ANNOUNCING THE 3RD ANNUAL PORT ST. LUCIE NATIONAL EATING DISORDERS WALK ON
OCTOBER 21, 2017 AT 9:00 AM AT TRADITION SQUARE IN ST. LUCIE COUNTY, FLORIDA
WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida, has made the
following determinations:
1. In the United States, 20 million women and 10 million men sufferfrom a clinically significant
eating disorder at some time in their life, including Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa,
Binge Eating Disorder, or other specified feeding or eating disorder.
2. The scope and severity of eating disorders are often misunderstood. Eating disorders are
serious illnesses, not lifestyle choices.
3. Anorexia has the highest mortality rate of any mental illness.
4. There is a significant lack of funding to combat eating disorders and their devastating
consequences. As a result, too many individuals and families are left feeling helpless,
hopeless and frightened.
5. The National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA) supports individualsand families affected
by eating disorders and serves as a catalyst for prevention, cures and access to quality care.
6. These serious illnesses can be confronted with increased awareness, early intervention and
improved access to treatment. NEDA provides programs and services to give families the
support they need to find answers for these life-threatening illnesses.
7. NEDA is proud to announce the 3'd Annual Port St. Lucie, FL NEDA Walk, taking place on
October 21, 2017 at 9:00 am at Tradition Square in St. Lucie County, Florida.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie
County, Florida:
1. This Board does hereby recognize October 21, 2017 as the 'T" Annual Port St. Lucie
National Disorders Association Walk" and encourage all county residents to support this
effort to raise community awareness and vital funds to support the millions of individuals
affected by eating disorders.
PASSED AND DULY ADOPTED this 5`h day of September, 2017.
