HomeMy WebLinkAbout17-176RESOLUTION A RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING AUGUST 31, 2017 AS "INTERNATIONAL OVERDOSE AWARENESS DAY" IN ST. LUCIE COUNTY, FLORIDA WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida, has made the following determinations: 1. Every year on August 31, International Overdose Awareness Day is recognized in communities around the world to rememberthose whose lives have been lost and to raise awareness about risks of overdose. 2. Addiction is defined as a disease of the brain by the American Medical Association and the shameful stigma associated with this disease must be eliminated in order to encourage those suffering to seek treatment. 3. Overdose is the number one cause of injury deaths in the nation with an accidental drug overdose occurring every eleven minutes, surpassing deaths from motor vehicle accidents or gun homicides. 4. By acknowledging all those who have been affected by substance abuse disorder, we help the general public understand its effects on St. Lucie County. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida: 1. This Board does hereby proclaim August 31, 2017 as "NATIONAL OVERDOSE AWARENESS DAY" in St. Lucie County, Florida. PASSED AND DULY ADOPTED this 5th day of September, 2017.
