HomeMy WebLinkAbout18-052RESOLUTION A RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING THE MONTH OF APRIL 2018 AS "NATIONAL AUTISM AWARENESS MONTH" IN ST. LUCIE COUNTY, FLORIDA WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida, has made the following determinations: 1. Autism is not a single disability that affects individuals the same way, but a spectrum of disabilities. 2. Autism disabilities are a complex developmental disability that affects more than one out of every 68 children, that is 1 in 42 males and 1 in 189 females. 3. No single cause of Autism has been found. 4. The cost to communities to educate a child with Autism is estimated to be at least three times that of educating a child without Autism. 5. Autism is the fastest growing developmental disability at a rate of more than 1,000% a year. 6. The cost of lifelong care and education can be reduced by as much as two-thirds with early diagnosis and intervention. 7. Autism Awareness Month is a special opportunity for everyone to educate themselves and the public about Autism and various challenges within the Autism community. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida: 1. This Board proclaims the month of April 2018 as "NATIONAL AUTISM AWARENESS MONTH" in St. Lucie County, Florida and commends the Center for Autism & Related Disabilities at Florida Atlantic University for their efforts on behalf of Autism Awareness Month.
