A RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING MAY 18, 2018 AS
"HAITIAN FLAG DAY" IN ST. LUCIE COUNTY, FLORIDA
WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida, has made the
following determinations:
1. The month of May is an important time for the Haitian community, as it marks the
anniversary of the birth of Toussaint Louverture, one of the leaders of the Haitian
Revolution. It also marks the union of the black and mulatto officials for the Haitian
Independence War.
2. May 18, 1803 marks the creation of the first flag of the Republic sewn by Catherine
Flon, goddaughter of Jean Jacques Dessalines, another hero in the Haitian
Revolution on the last day of the Congress of Arcahaie.
3. Throughout the month, especially on May 18, the Haitian community will gather to
celebrate their heritage and their flag through historical and cultural traditions and
observances.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie
County, Florida:
1. This Board does hereby proclaim May 18, 2018 as "HAITIAN FLAG DAY" in St. Lucie
County, Florida.
2. This Board further encourages all residents and visitors in St. Lucie County to attend
the Haitian Flag Day Festival at the Port St. Lucie Civic Center at Civic Center Place
on Thursday, May 18, 2018.
PASSED AND DULY ADOPTED this 1st day of May 2018.
