HomeMy WebLinkAbout18-077RESOLUTION A RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING APRIL 28, 2018 AS "WORKERS' MEMORIAL DAY" IN ST. LUCIE COUNTY, FLORIDA WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida, has made the following determinations: 1. Every year more than 5,000 workers are killed on the job in the United States; and each day, more than 10,000 workers were made ill or injured because of unsafe working conditions. 2. The cost of job injuries and illnesses is enormous — estimated at $250 Billion to $360 Billion a year. 3. Nearly 8 million state and local public employees still lack OSHA protection — 62% higher than the injury and illness rate for the private -sector workforce. 4. Current trends are weakening Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) for all workers in the public and private sectors. In Florida, over 800,000 state and local public employees are not covered by the Occupational Safety and Health Act. 5. Concerned American citizens are determined to prevent these tragedies by: Observing Workers' Memorial Day on April 28, as a day to remember these victims of workplace injuries and disease; Renewing our efforts to seek stronger workplace safety and health protections, better standards and enforcement, and fair and just compensation; Demand that lawmakers create good jobs that ensure the dignity and safety every worker deserves and improve the safety and health in every American workplace. 6. Workers' Memorial Day is observed in nearly 100 countries with the core theme "Mourn for the Dead, Fight for the Living". NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida: 1. This Board does hereby April 28, 2018, as "WORKERS' MEMORIAL DAY" in St. Lucie County, Florida. 2.
