A RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING THE MONTH OF SEPTEMBER 2018 AS
"SUICIDE AWARENESS MONTH"IN ST. LUCIE COUNTY, FLORIDA
WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida, has made the
following determinations:
1. In the United States, one person dies by suicide every 12.8 minutes, with close to 45,000
reported deaths by suicide in our country during 2016.
2. In our country, suicide is the 2"d leading cause of death for 10-34 year olds, and is the 101h
leading cause of death for people of all ages.
3. In St. Lucie County, the suicide rate is 14.1% with 48 "reported" suicides in 2017.
4. Each person's death by suicide intimately affects at least six other people, with over 200,000
newly bereaved each year.
5. Far too many Floridians die by suicide each year and most of these deaths are preventable.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie
County, Florida:
1. This Board does hereby proclaim the month of September 2018 as "SUICIDE AWARENESS
MONTH" in St. Lucie County, Florida.
2. This Board further urges our residents to learn howthey may help because Suicide Prevention
is everyone's business.
