LUCIE COUNTY, FLORIDA SUPPORTING THE FLORIDA FISH AND WILDLIFE CONSERVATION COMMISSION'S INVESTIGATION OF OPTIONS FOR FUTURE MANAGEMENT OF SHORE -BASED SHARK FISHERY IN ST. LUCIE COUNTY, FLORIDA WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida, has made the following determinations: 1. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) held a series of Shore -based Shark Fishing Public Workshops during the months of July and August 2018. 2. The FWC stated theSstate of Florida has about 25 shark bites a year in Florida waters and about one percent of bites are fatal. 3. Shore -based shark fishing has been a high interest topic in recent years. 4. A proposal has been made to limit shore -based shark fishing to nightime hours and to prohibit shore -based shark fishing from specific coastal areas like "public bathing beaches". 5. Chumming is the practice of placing fish parts or other animal products in the water forthe purpose of attracting fish. A proposal has been made to limit or prohibit chumming from the shore to minimize impacts to common, non -shark fishing practices. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida: 1. This Board supports the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission's investigation of options for future management of shore based shark fishery in St. Lucie County, Florida. 2. This resolution shall become effective upon adoption. 3. The County Administrator is directed to send a copy of this resolution to the County's state legislative delegation and the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission.
