A RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF ST. LUCIE COUNTY, FLORIDA
SEEKING THE FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION'S PARTICIPATION TO REPLACE
THE OLD DIXIE HIGHWAY OVER TAYLOR CREEK BRIDGE IN ST. LUCIE COUNTY, FLORIDA
WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida, has made the
following determinations:
1. The Old Dixie Highway over Taylor Creek Bridge sustained damage due to Hurricane Irma
and was closed for safety reasons on January 25, 2018. The bridge remains closed and
traffic is currently detoured onto US Highway 1.
2. Repairing the bridge would cost approximately $800,000 and due to its age and
condition, the bridge would likely need replaced in approximately five years.
3. Several options to replace the bridge have been proposed by the County Engineer:
Option 1 - Removal of the existing bridge.
Option 2 - Replace the bridge within the existing right of way.
Option 3 - Build a one way bridge with an East Coast Greenway Trail.
4. All of the options would require the County to pursue additional funding sources.
S. The County is interested in pursuing funding options including but not limited
to the Florida Department of Transportation.
6. The proposed alignment and configuration of the new A1A North Causeway Bridge
project significantly modifies the current access to the marina and other businesses on
Old Dixie Highway.
7. Extending Sunny Lane will restore access to Old Dixie Highway and reduce anticipated
traffic at the Juanita Avenue/US Highway 1 intersection.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie
County, Florida:
1. This Board requests County staff to pursue funding options including but not limited to
the Florida Department of Transportation for the replacement of the Old Dixie Highway
over Taylor Creek Bridge in St. Lucie County, Florida.
2. This Board requests County staff to coordinate with the City of Fort Pierce and the Town
of St. Lucie Village regarding Old Dixie Highway Bridge replacement options.
3. This Board supports the extension of Sunny Lane from Old Dixie Highway to US Highway
1 as part of the A1A North Causeway Bridge project.
4. This resolution shall become effective upon adoption.
5. The County Administrator is directed to send a copy of this resolution to the County's state
legislative delegation and the State of Florida Department of Transportation.
