HomeMy WebLinkAbout18-208RESOLUTION A RESOLUTION SUPPORTING THE HEALTHY ST. LUCIE COALITION'S "BILLION STEPS CHALLENGE" AND PROCLAIMING NOVEMBER 17, 2018 AS "TAKE A HIKE DAY" IN ST. LUCIE COUNTY, FLORIDA WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida, has made the following determinations: 1. Daily physical activity is essential to the health and wellness of our citizens and has many benefits, including, but not limited to helping us maintain a healthy weight and lowering the risk of diabetes, cancer, heart disease, liver disease and hypertension. Every $1 spent on walking could save approximately $3 in medical expenses (American Heart Association). 2. Hiking is a low cost activity that is beneficial to all ages. Research has shown that walking/hiking in nature reduces stress and blood pressure while also providing positive low impact cardio activity. St. Lucie County has over 42 miles of hiking trails and 10,000 acres to explore. 3. St. Lucie County's Environmental Resources Department in partnership with The Healthy St. Lucie Coalition's 2018 "Billion Steps Challenge", is proud to host an event that challenges St. Lucie County residents and visitors to explore four of the County's most beautiful preserves. 5. You can hit the trails on November 17, 2018 from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm as part of a Special Event ""Take a Hike Day" - 1 Day; 4 Preserves to Explore". You can select one, two, three or embrace the full challenge and attend all four hikes. The event is free and appropriate for ages 8 and up. Visit the George LeStrange Preserve from 8:30 am to 10 am; the Oxbow Eco - Center Preserve from 10:30 am to 12 pm; the Citrus Hammock Preserve from 1:30to 2:30 pm and the Ancient Oaks Preserve from 3:00 pm to 4:30 pm. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida: 1. This Board does hereby proclaim November 17, 2018 as "Take a Hike Day" in St. Lucie County and declare their support for Healthy St. Lucie Coalition's "Billion Steps Challenge" in St. Lucie County, Florida. 2. This Board further asks all citizens to observe this Special Event - "Take a Hike Day" - 1 Day; 4 Preserves to Explore - by signing up at www.slchikes.org or call (772) 462-2526 and spend more time outside and meeting the physical activity recommendations through walking or other activities.
