A RESOLUTION SUPPORTING THE HEALTHY ST. LUCIE COALITION'S "BILLION STEPS CHALLENGE"
AND PROCLAIMING NOVEMBER 17, 2018 AS "TAKE A HIKE DAY" IN ST. LUCIE COUNTY, FLORIDA
WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida, has made the
following determinations:
1. Daily physical activity is essential to the health and wellness of our citizens and has many
benefits, including, but not limited to helping us maintain a healthy weight and lowering the
risk of diabetes, cancer, heart disease, liver disease and hypertension. Every $1 spent on
walking could save approximately $3 in medical expenses (American Heart Association).
2. Hiking is a low cost activity that is beneficial to all ages. Research has shown that
walking/hiking in nature reduces stress and blood pressure while also providing positive low
impact cardio activity. St. Lucie County has over 42 miles of hiking trails and 10,000 acres to
explore.
3. St. Lucie County's Environmental Resources Department in partnership with The Healthy St.
Lucie Coalition's 2018 "Billion Steps Challenge", is proud to host an event that challenges St.
Lucie County residents and visitors to explore four of the County's most beautiful preserves.
5. You can hit the trails on November 17, 2018 from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm as part of a Special
Event ""Take a Hike Day" - 1 Day; 4 Preserves to Explore". You can select one, two, three or

Center Preserve from 10:30 am to 12 pm; the Citrus Hammock Preserve from 1:30to 2:30 pm

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie
