A RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING THE MONTH OF APRIL 2019 AS "GUARDIAN AD LITEM MONTH"
AND "CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION MONTH" AND THE WEEK OF APRIL 7 THROUGH APRIL 13, 2018
AS "NATIONAL VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION WEEK" IN ST. LUCIE COUNTY, FLORIDA
WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida, has made the
following determinations:
1. St. Lucie County prides itself on giving back to the community and contributing to
the quality of life among our citizens.
2. For more than three decades, CASTLE has upheld our legacy of protecting the lives
of abused children and families. CASTLE works diligently with Communities Connected for Kids and
the Department of Children & Families to ensure that every child suffering from abuse has a
brighter future and hope for a safe life. The month of April has been designated as "Child Abuse
Prevention Month". CASTLE, along with its community partners, embraces opportunities that can
potentially change the way society cares for children and youth.
3. April 7 through April 13, 2019 has been designated as National Volunteer
Appreciation Week. The month of April has been designated as "Guardian Ad Litem Month".
4. The Guardian Ad Litem Program is a partnership of volunteers and staff who also
advocate for the best interest of abused, abandoned and neglected children within our
community. There are approximately 536 children in St. Lucie County involved in the court system
through no fault of their own.
5. There are approximately 124 abused, abandoned or neglected children in St. Lucie
County currently waiting for a volunteer Guardian ad Litem to be their voice.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie
County, Florida:
1. This Board does hereby proclaim the month of April 2019 as "CHILD ABUSE
PREVENTION MONTH" and "GUARDIAN AD LITEM MONTH" ,and the week of April 7-13, 2019
as "NATIONAL VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION WEEK" in St. Lucie County, Florida.
2. This Board urges all residents of St. Lucie County to give of their time to make a
difference in the lives of most vulnerable children by volunteering with the Guardian ad Litem
Program.
3. This Board further encourages others to focus attention on those children who live
in the shadow of an uncertain future while they await forever families.
PASSED AND DULY ADOPTED this 16`' day of April 2019.
