A RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING APRIL 28, 2020 AS
"WORKERS MEMORIAL DAY" IN ST. LUCIE COUNTY, FLORIDA
WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida, has made the
following determinations:
1. Every year over 5,190 workers are killed on the job in the United States, and an
estimated 50,000 to 60,000 die from occupational diseases, resulting in a loss of 150
workers each day from hazardous working conditions.
2. The cost of job injuries and illnesses is enormous -estimated at $250 billion to $360
billion a year.
3. Current trends are weakening Occupational Safety and Health Administration protection
for all workers in the public and private sectors. In Florida, 909,831 state and local public
employees are not covered by the OSH Act. At its current staffing it would take OSHA
inspectors 270 years to pay a single visit to each Florida workplace.
4. Concerned Americans are determined to prevent these tragedies by:
• Observing Workers Memorial Day on April 28, as a day to remember these
victims of workplace injuries and disease;
• Renewing our efforts to seek stronger workplace safety and health protections,
better standards and enforcement, and fair and just compensation;
• Demand that lawmakers create good jobs that ensure the dignity and safety every
worker deserves and improve the safety and health in every American workplace.
5. Workers' Memorial Day is observed in nearly 100 countries with the core theme,
"Mourn for the Dead, Fight for the Living".
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie
County, Florida:
1. This Board does hereby proclaim April 28, 2020 as "WORKERS MEMORIAL DAY" in St.
Lucie County, Florida.
PASSED AND DULY ADOPTED this 7th day of April, 2020.
