Tipton County Administrator St. Lucie County 2300 Virginia Avenue Fort Pierce, FL 34982 Dear Mr.Tipton: Due to recent Hurricane Irma the unincorporated area of the County, including privately owned gated communities, are experiencing a large volume of trees, shrubbery and other debris accumulating along the roadways. A major concern of the Fire District is that citizens are burning debris to expedite its removal. Also, in some cases the debris is piled so high and close to the roadways, that is could impede the response of fire apparatus. Any timely assistance that you can provide in the removal of this debris will be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Buddy Emerson Fire Chief bertff fLORIDA F, vt(, -.S\ . KEN J. Tipton County Administrator St. Lucie County 2300 Virginia Avenue Fort Pierce, FL 34982 Dear Mr. Tipton: On Sunday, September 10, Hurricane Irma unleashed its fury on the Treasure Coast. St. Lucie County suffered extensive damage, power and water outages as well localized flooding. As a result of Hurricane Irma, extensive vegetation and debris covered the St. Lucie County roadways, further challenging the response of public safety services. Since Hurricane Irma, first responders have remain challenged by the extensive vegetation and debris on the St. Lucie County roadways. The public is counting on us to get to emergency scenes quickly and safely so we can provide the service the public requires. Accordingly, I respectfully request that all efforts be made to expedite the removal of vegetation and debris from the roadways, right of ways, and driveways throughout our county(including the gated communities)to ensure a quick and safe response. Removal of this debris is a matter of public health and safety. As you are aware, the St. Lucie County Land Development Code encourages private ownership and maintenance of roadways within newer subdivisions, since about 1990. The County has a large number of private neighborhoods, representing a large percentage(approximately 25%)of the County's taxpayer base. It is important to note that the County furnishes fire protection, police protection, ambulance, municipal solid waste, and utility services to these communities. The United States Postal Service also serves many of these neighborhoods. As a consequence of Hurricane Irma generated debris creating a threat to public health and safety and the environment, the County's Public Utilities staff is proceeding with the removal of debris within these private neighborhoods and they are working to execute "Right-of-Entry" instruments with each community prior to collection of debris.
