HomeMy WebLinkAbout21-335 RESOLUTION NO. 21-335 A RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING THE MONTH OF SEPTEMBER 2021 AS "NATIONAL SUICIDE PREVENTION AWARENESS MONTH"AND CELEBRATING 2-1-1 HELPLINE'S 50 YEARS OF SERVICE AND SUICIDE PREVENTION IN ST.LUCIE COUNTY,FLORIDA WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida, has made the following determinations: 1. September is National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, which directs the community's attention to the public health epidemic destroying lives, devasting families and impacting communities. 2. The 2-1-1 HelpLine is that central access point providing individuals and families with guidance and crisis support via telephone or text any time of day or night. It is also the regional responder for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (1-800-273-TALK). The 2-1-1 staff work 24 hours a day to prevent suicide loss of life with a daily average of 126 mental health/crisis calls & contacts with 10 callers with concerns of suicide daily. 3. As the second leading cause of death for ages 10-34 and the fourth leading cause for ages 35-54, suicide is a major contributor to premature mortality. In 2019, the age- adjusted rate per 100,000 population of Suicide Deaths in St. Lucie County was 13.4 compared to Florida at 14.5. 4. Suicide is the only type of death that is 100% preventable; and by offering the public education, data, support, and services we as a community have taken a step toward preventing another suicide by our residents. NOW,THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida that this Board does hereby proclaim the month of September 2021 as "SUICIDE PREVENTION AWARENESS MONTH" in St. Lucie County, Florida and extend recognition to 2-1-1 HelpLine for celebrating 50 years of service, and front-line Suicide Prevention in in St. Lucie County and in so doing, urge all citizens to be aware of the only telephone number they need to know to access information on 1600 agency providers with wide- ranging programs and services throughout our area. September is National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, which directs the community's attention to the public health epidemic destroying lives, whole families and sometimes, entire communities. 2. Suicide rates on the Treasure Coast and in Okeechobee were increasing in the first half of 2021 according to our Medical Examiner's Office. 3. There were nearly two and a half times as many suicides (47,511) in the United States as there were homicides (19,141). 4. For every completed suicide in 2019, there were 29.05 attempts at suicide. 5. As the second leading cause of death for ages 10-34 and the fourth leading cause for ages 35-54, suicide is a major contributor to premature mortality. 6. This Board is honored to be part of the healing process, raising awareness for and support of those affected by suicide by offering supporting services addressing mental health illnesses and drug and alcohol addiction.
