A RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING THE MONTH OF APRIL 2022 AS
"EARTH MONTH" IN ST. LUCIE COUNTY, FLORIDA
WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida has made
the following determinations:
1. On April 22, 1970, millions of Americans took to the streets to demonstrate for a healthy,
sustainable environment through conservation and protection as part of"Earth Day".
2. Earth Day helped to inspire momentous environmental legislation, including the creation of
the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the adoption of the Clean Air, Clean
Water and Endangered Species Acts.
3. Earth Day marks a commitment to environmental stewardship and to sustainability efforts
by communities and volunteers across the world. Communities of today and the future face
extraordinary environmental challenges, such as environmental degradation, habitat loss,
public health issues, climate change, food and water shortages.
4. The residents of St. Lucie County have voiced their commitment to environmental issues
by approving the Environmentally Significant Lands Bond Referendum in 1994.
5. This year marks the 25th year anniversary of the establishment of the Oxbow Eco-Center,
which is a testament to a high level of commitment and pride shared for local natural resources
and the public's desire for access to high performance public spaces. St. Lucie County celebrates
Earth Day by extending it to the month of April in recognition of the commitment to
environmental stewardship. Achieving the County's strategic goal to protect, conserve and
manage the county's natural resources including land, air, water and wildlife will require
