A RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING THE MONTH OF MAY AS
"HAITIAN AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH" IN ST. LUCIE COUNTY, FLORIDA
WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida, has made
the following determinations:
1. Haitian American Heritage Month is a jubilant celebration in the United States embracing
Haitian heritage and culture.
2. May 18 is Flag Day in Haiti which celebrates the culture and heritage of the Haitian Flag,
honoring their forefathers and replenishing their resolve for Haiti's Future.
3. Haiti is a word meaning "Land of Mountains" and was given its name by its first
inhabitants.
4. First celebrated in Boston, Massachusetts in 1998, Haitian American Heritage Month is
observed nationwide in the month of May with parades, festivals, and school activities.
5. Haitian American Heritage Month is held to salute Haitian and Haitian American
communities and to exhibit appreciation for their culture and heritage, which have
immeasurably enriched the lives of the people of this nation and state.
6. As educators, authors, community leaders, activists, athletes, artists, musicians, and
politicians, Haitian Americans have made their mark in every facet of society and have
contributed to the betterment and diversity of St. Lucie County.
7. St. Lucie County has thrived as a melding of immigrants, united by common values and
the promise of a better tomorrow.
8. Our vibrant Haitian community has contributed tremendously to the vitality of St. Lucie
County with rich, cultural influences.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County,
Florida that this Board does hereby proclaim the month of May as "Haitian American Heritage Month"
in St. Lucie County, Florida and further urge all St. Lucie County citizens to celebrate the unique history
and culture and people of the Republic of Haiti.
PASSED AND DULY ADOPTED this 3rd day of May 2022.
