Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most common malignant brain tumor, accounting for approximately 1/2 of all primary malignant brain tumors; the most aggressive, complex, difficult to treat, and deadly type of brain tumor and there is no known cure. Approximately 13,460 new cases will be diagnosed in the US in 2022 and it is estimated that more than 10,000 individuals will succumb to GBM each year. 2. GBM accounts for about 48% of all malignant brain tumors, and it is estimated that 1,840 people will be diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor in Florida this year. Of those 1,840 people, approximately 900 will be diagnosed with a glioblastoma this year. The 5-year survival rate for GBM patients is only 6.8%, and the median length of survival for these patients is only 8 months. 3. GBM is described as a disease that affects the"essence of self",as the treatment and removal of glioblastoma presents significant challenges due to the fragile nature of the brain. Patients and caregivers play a critical role in furthering research for GBM. Although research advances may fuel the development of new treatments for GBM, challenging obstacles towards new treatments remain, and there are no screening or early detection methods. 4. In 2020, the National Cancer Institute established the Glioblastoma Therapeutics Network ("GIN"), as part of a national infrastructure to enhance and support the discovery and development of GBM therapies available for multi-institutional GTN teams to drive therapeutic agents through pre-clinical studies and early-phase clinical trials, which are necessary to rapidly evaluate potential treatments to advance toward cures and improved quality of life. In 2021,the World Health Organization reclassified brain tumors and made significant changes to the molecular characteristics of a GBM diagnosis, necessitating critical biomarker testing for patients suspected of having a possible glioblastoma. Although GBM was first described in medical and scientific literature in the 1920s and despite its devastating prognosis; only 4 drugs and 1 medical device have been approved by the FDA to treat GBM. The mortality rates associated have changed little during the past 30 years. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida does hereby proclaim July 20, 2022,as"Glioblastoma Awareness Day"in St. Lucie County, Florida, and honors the individuals who have lost their lives to GBM or are currently living with this deadly disease who continue to demonstrate great determination, adaptability and courage in their efforts to live their best life with this disease, and we pay tribute to those that are promoting awareness of GBM such as, the B.R.A.I.N. (Bringing Resources and Information Now) Cancer Foundation of the Treasure Coast. PASSED AND DULY ADOPTED this 5th day of July 2022.
