A RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING THE MONTH OF SEPTEMBER 2022
AS "NATIONAL SUICIDE PREVENTION AWARENESS MONTH"
IN ST.LUCIE COUNTY,FLORIDA
WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida, has made
the following determinations:
1. September is National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, which directs the
community's attention to the public health epidemic destroying lives, devasting
families and impacting communities.
2. According to the CDC, as the second leading cause of death for ages 10-34 and the
fourth leading cause for ages 35-54, suicide is a major contributor to premature
mortality.
3. Suicide is the only type of death that is 100% preventable.
4. According to Florida Health Charts, in 2020, the age-adjusted rate per 100,000
population of suicide deaths (ALL) in St. Lucie County was 11.2 compared to Florida at
13.1.
5. In 2020, there were nearly two times as many suicides (45,979) in the United States as
there were homicides (24,576), and according to the AFSP, for every completed suicide
in 2020, there were 26 attempts at suicide.
6. By offering the public education, data, support, and services, we as a community have
taken a step toward preventing another suicide by our residents.
NOW,THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie
County, Florida that this Board does hereby proclaim the month of September 2022 as
"NATIONAL SUICIDE PREVENTION AWARENESS MONTH" in St. Lucie County, Florida.
PASSED AND DULY ADOPTED this 6th day of September 2022.
