A RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING SEPTEMBER 15, 2022, THROUGH OCTOBER 15, 2022
AS "NATIONAL HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH" IN ST. LUCIE COUNTY, FLORIDA
WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida has made the
following determinations:
1. Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to
October 15, by celebrating the contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from
Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America, and South America.
2. The Hispanic Heritage observance began in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under
President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-
day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15. It was enacted into law on
August 17, 1988, with the approval of Public Law 100-402.
3. The theme for celebrating Hispanic Heritage in 2022 is "Unidos: Inclusivity for a Stronger
Nation". The theme invites us to celebrate Hispanic Heritage and to reinforce the need to ensure
diverse voices and perspectives are welcomed in decision-making processes, thereby helping to
build stronger communities and a stronger Nation.
4. Hispanics In Action, Inc. is committed to "Inclusivity for a Stronger Nation," and the
advancement of St. Lucie County residents. For over 17 years it has serviced the residents of St.
Lucie County teaching Spanish, English, French, and Italian. Through social media platforms,they
have been able to reach upward of 15,000 students that speak English as a second language and
have prepared over 1200 residents to become US Citizens,with over 800 receiving US Citizenship.
5. Hispanics in Action, Inc. has leveraged over 200 volunteers (teachers and local
institutions) to assist residents with the accommodations necessary to learn English, obtain
citizenship, and gain employment.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie
County, Florida hereby proclaim September 15, 2022, through October 15, 2022, as "National
Hispanic Heritage Month" in St. Lucie County, Florida and further encourages all citizens to
observe this important month by participating in appropriate ceremonies and activities planned
throughout St. Lucie County.
