A RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING THE MONTH OF NOVEMBER 2022 AS
"NATIVE AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH" IN ST. LUCIE COUNTY, FLORIDA
WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida, has made the
following determinations:
1. Native Americans and the indigenous peoples of North America have significantly
influenced the history and culture of our great nation.
2. The contributions of Native Americans have enhanced the freedom, prosperity, and
greatness that America continues to enjoy today.
3. The customs and traditions of Native Americans are respected and celebrated as part of
the rich legacy of the United States.
4. In 1924, Congress enacted the Indian Citizenship Act. In 1986 Congress passed a law and
President Ronald Reagan signed the proclamation authorizing American Indian Week. In 1990,
President George H. W. Bush designated November as National American Indian Heritage
Month.After 100 years of efforts to recognize Native Americans, National Native Heritage Month
is celebrated to recognize native cultures and educate the public about the heritage, history, art,
and traditions of the American Indians and Alaskan Natives.
5. Founded in 1965, the Florida Indian Heritage Association ("F.I.H.A.") is dedicated to
preserving and celebrating the traditions, culture, songs, and dances of Native Americans.
6. F.I.H.A. will be celebrating 57 years this coming year and will be celebrating at their
Anniversary Powwow in March of 2023.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie
County, Florida:
1. This Board does hereby proclaim the month of November 2022 as "NATIVE AMERICAN
HERITAGE MONTH" in St. Lucie County, Florida.
2. This Board urges the citizens of St. Lucie County to join us in honoring Native American
Heritage Month, with community celebrations, as well as cultural, artistic, educational, and
historical activities that will take place across the State of Florida and in St. Lucie County,
Florida.
PASSED AND DULY ADOPTED this 1st day of November 2022.
