HomeMy WebLinkAbout22-213 RESOLUTION NO. 2022-213 A RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING THE MONTH OF NOVEMBER 2022 AS "ST. LUCIE COUNTY CONSERVATION ALLIANCE MONTH"AND RECOGNIZING THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE CONSERVATION ALLIANCE IN ST. LUCIE COUNTY, FLORIDA WHEREAS,the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida, has made the following determinations: 1. The Conservation Alliance of St. Lucie County ("the Conservation Alliance"), was established in 1972 and throughout the 70's advocated for a $10 million Beach Bond referendum to protect beachfront land from development, including the 340 acres that is now Fort Pierce Inlet State Park; launched the "Save the Savannas" movement resulting in the removal of a causeway that impeded natural flow and acquisition of 3,800 acres to establish the Savannas State Park; helped create the Savannas Reserve Endowment, negotiated a storm surge barrier for the nuclear power plant; drafted language for adding Tree Protection to the Comprehensive Plan, and more. 2. In the 1980s,the Conservation Alliance, monitored water quality in the North Fork of the St. Lucie River resulting substantial improvements; organized a state certified group of"Turtle Mothers" to successfully relocated 28,000 Sea Turtle eggs; helped write the County's Sea Turtle Protection Ordinance; and helped secure passage of a second $10 million bond used to purchase 6 additional County public beaches. 3. Since 1990 the Conservation Alliance assisted in passing Preservation 2,000, a bill that led to the 1 millionth acre of sensitive land purchased in Florida;the$20 million bond for purchase of environmentally significant lands in SLC; blocked the Walton Road Toll Bridge project; helped with the Treasure Coast International Airport Master Plan;secured a grant for the Adopt-A-Beach Program; helped end FPL's plan for new coal plants in Florida; legally challenged the injection of industrial waste into the aquifer; established the Mariposa Cane Slough Preserve; prevented polluting industries from being included in Fort Pierce Port plans; served as expert witnesses and advocated denial of permits for several projects that would have impacted tidal mangrove wetlands and sea grass beds; opposed the USA Biosolids Composting Facility; hosted Annual Party In The Park celebrations educating the public on protection of natural resources,and helped to initiate Resilience Planning to address climate change impacts in St. Lucie County. 4. The Conservation Alliance of St. Lucie County Florida is a non-profit, non-partisan, non-political organization that works tirelessly to advance their mission to protect the environment and ecology of St. Lucie County. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida does hereby proclaim the month of November 2022 as "St. Lucie County Conservation Alliance Month" and recognizes the 50th Anniversary of the Conservation Alliance of St. Lucie in St. Lucie County, Florida. PASSED AND DULY ADOPTED this 1st day of November 2022.
