HomeMy WebLinkAbout23-074 RESOLUTION NO. 23-074 A RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING MAY 2023 AS "MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH" IN ST. LUCIE COUNTY, FLORIDA WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida, has made the following determinations: 1. There is a proven connection between good mental health and overall personal health. 2. Only one out of two people with a serious form of mental illness seeks treatment for his or her mental illness. 3. Surroundings can impact if, how, and when a person's needs are met, which in turn affects mental health. 4. Research shows that the most effective way to reduce stigma is through personal contact with someone with a mental illness to alleviate the fear of discrimination. 5. 1 in 4 adults and 1 in 5 children experience a diagnosable mental disorder in a given year. 6. With early and effective interventions, those individuals with mental health conditions can recover and lead full, productive lives. 7. People with mental illnesses make important contributions to our families and our communities. 8. Each business, school, government agency, health care provider, organization, and citizen share the burden of mental health in the community and has a responsibility to promote mental wellness and support prevention efforts. 9. Greater public awareness about mental health can change negative attitudes and behaviors toward people with mental illnesses. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida: 1. This Board does hereby proclaim the month of May 2023 as "MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH" in St. Lucie County, Florida. 2. The Board urges all citizens to recommit our community to increasing awareness and understanding of mental illnesses, reducing stigma and discrimination, and promoting appropriate and accessible services for all people with mental illnesses.
