LUCIE COUNTY, FLORIDA WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida, has made the following determinations: 1. Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most common malignant brain tumor, accounting for approximately 50%of all primary malignant brain tumors; the most aggressive, complex, difficult to treat, and deadly type of brain tumor and there is no known cure. 2. Approximately 14,490 new cases of glioblastoma will be diagnosed in the United States, and it is estimated that more than 10,000 individuals will succumb to GBM each year. 3. It is estimated that 1,930 people will be diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor in Florida in 2023. Of those 1,930 individuals, approximately 927 will be diagnosed with a GBM this year. 4. GBM is described as a disease that affects the "essence of self", as the treatment and removal of glioblastoma presents significant challenges due to the fragile nature of the brain. 5. Patients and caregivers play a critical role in furthering research for GBM. 6. Although research advances may fuel the development of new treatments for GBM, challenging obstacles towards new treatments remain, and there are no screening or early detection methods. 7. Relative to other types of cancers, brain cancer patients pay the second highest out-of- pocket costs for medical services in both the initial and end-of-life phases of care. 8. The 5-year survival rate for glioblastoma patients is only 6.9 percent, and the median length of survival for glioblastoma patients is only 8 months. 9. Although glioblastoma was first described in medical and scientific literature in the 1920s, and despite its devastating prognosis, only 5 drugs and 1 medical device have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration to specifically treat glioblastoma, survival rates and mortality statistics for GBM have been virtually unchanged for decades. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida does hereby proclaim July 19, 2023, as "Glioblastoma Awareness Day" in St. Lucie County, Florida, expresses support for the individuals who are battling brain tumors, as well as the families, friends, and caregivers of those individuals and honors the individuals who have died from the devastating disease of glioblastoma, and we pay tribute to those that are advancing public awareness and advocating on behalf of individuals with GBM such as, the B.R.A.I.N.
