SEPTEMBER 2023 AS "NATIONAL SUICIDE
PREVENTION AWARENESS MONTH"
September is National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month,which directs
the community's attention to the public health epidemic destroying lives,devasting
families and impacting communities.
According to the CDC, Suicide is the second leading cause of death for ages
10-34 and is a major contributor to premature mortality.
On average, there are 132 suicides per day in this country.
According to Florida Health Charts, in 2021, the age-adjusted rate per
100,000 population of suicide deaths(ALL)in St.Lucie County was 16.4 compared
to Florida at 13.8.
In 2021, there were nearly two times as many suicides (48,183) in the
United States as there were homicides (26,031), and according to the AFSP, for
every death by suicide, there were 35 attempts.
By offering the public education, data, support, and services, we as a
community have taken a step toward preventing another suicide by our residents.
