A RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING THE MONTH OF OCTOBER 2023
AS "FIRE PREVENTION MONTH" IN ST. LUCIE COUNTY, FLORIDA
WHEREAS,the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida, has made the
following determinations:
1. St. Lucie County Fire District is committed to ensuring the safety and security of all those
living in and visiting our area.
2. Fire is a serious public safety concern both locally and nationally, and homes are the
locations where people are at greatest risk from fire. Home fires caused 2,800 civilian deaths in
the United States in 2021, according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). Fire
departments in the US responded to 338,000 home fires.
3. Cooking is the leading cause of home fires in the US and fire departments responded to
more than 166,400 annually between 2016 and 2020. Two of every five home fires start in the
kitchen with 31% of these fires resulting from unattended cooking. More than half of reported
non-fatal home cooking fire injuries occurred when victims tried to fight the fire themselves.
4. Children under 5 face a higher risk of non-fire burns associated with cooking than being
burned in a cooking fire. St. Lucie County residents should turn pot handles toward the back of
the stove; always keep a lid nearby while cooking; keep a three-foot kid-free zone around the
stove, oven, and other things that could get hot; watch what they heat; and set a timer to remind
them they are cooking.
5. County residents are responsive to public education measures and are able to take
personal steps to increase their safety from fire, especially in their homes.
6. The 2023 Fire Prevention Month theme, "Cooking safety starts with YOU. Pay attention
to fire prevention" effectively serves to remind Saint Lucie County residents to stay alert and use
caution when cooking to reduce the risk of kitchen fire.
7. St. Lucie County Fire District observed "Fire Prevention Week" October 8, 2023—October
14, 2023.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie
County, Florida does hereby proclaim October 2023 as "Fire Prevention Month" in St. Lucie
County, Florida; urges all citizens and residents of St. Lucie County to check their kitchens for
hazards and to use safe cooking practices; urges citizens to participate in the many public safety
and fire prevention activities and efforts throughout St. Lucie County seeking to reduce the great
loss of life and property caused by fires that are offered during Fire Prevention Month 2023; and
hereby requests the cooperation of the news media (radio, television and newspapers)to
publicize this Resolution and give full publicity thereof.
PASSED AND DULY ADOPTED this 3rd day of October 2023.
