A RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING SATURDAY, MAY 11, 2024 AS
"NATIONAL LETTER CARRIERS FOOD DRIVE DAY"
IN ST. LUCIE COUNTY, FLORIDA
WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida, has made
the following determinations:
1. On the second Saturday of May each year, letter carriers across the country collect non-
perishable food items and donate the items to local food pantries as part of the nation's largest
one-day food drive.
2. An estimated 12 percent of American households in the United States may experience food
insecurity in any given year. For low-income Americans that number jumps to 36 percent. After
recognizing the need to address this critical issue members of the National Association of Letter
Carriers (NALC) created the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive.
3. Since the pilot drive was held in 1991, the NALC Stamp Out Hunger has generated
approximately 1.9 billion pounds of donated food and distributed the donations to more than
10,000 cities and towns in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico the Virgin Islands and
Guam.
4. We recognize all local letter carriers for their commitment to their communities. We
acknowledge the noteworthy milestone of 33 years that the National Letter Carrier Stamp Out
Hunger Food Drive celebrates in 2024.
5. Together, we can all help to feed our hungry. We encourage the citizens of our county to
support the 2024 drive by placing non-perishable food items in or near their mailboxes on Food
Drive Day. Letter carriers will pick up the items while delivering the mail. Volunteers coordinated
through Mustard Seed Ministries, the Salvation Army, and others will package and distribute all
donations collected to food insecure community members throughout St. Lucie County.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie
County, Florida that this Board does hereby proclaim Saturday, May 11, 2024, as "National Letter
Carriers Food Drive Day" in St. Lucie County.
PASSED AND DULY ADOPTED this 7th day of May 2024.
