A RESOLUTION OF THE ST. LUCIE COUNTY BOARD OF COUNTY
COMMISSIONERS IN SUPPORT OF 2024 FLORIDA HOUSE BILL 1023
OR SIMILAR LEGISLATION THAT LIMITS COMPENSATION TO A
HEALTH CARE PROVIDER OR AN ENTITY THAT DOES NOT HAVE A
CONTRACT WITH THE COUNTY TO PROVIDE SUCH SERVICES FOR
AN INMATE HOUSED IN A ST. LUCIE COUNTY DETENTION CENTER
WHEREAS, the St. Lucie County Board of County Commissioners provides our
constituents with a responsive and reflective local government; and
WHEREAS,the county is statutorily responsible for inmate health care costs and have
been billed nearly $40 million in the last three fiscal years by health care providers; and
WHEREAS,without cost management measures, rising inmate medical costs will
continue to impede St. Lucie County's ability to be fiscally responsible, plan appropriately, and
make reasonable financial projections; and
WHEREAS,the State of Florida has proven that establishing a limit on inmate medical
costs is an effective tool for cost management with the successful implementation of Laws of
Florida 2009-63; and
WHEREAS,the St. Lucie County Board of County Commissioners, as part of their 2024
State Legislative Program, supports legislation that limits compensation to a health care provider
or an entity that does not have a contract with the county to provide such services for an inmate
housed in a St. Lucie County Detention Center.
NOW,THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED,BY THE ST. LUCIE COUNTY BOARD
OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS that the Board supports 2024 Florida House Bill 1023 or any
other similar legislation.
This resolution shall take effect on adoption.
After motion and second, the vote on this resolution was as follows:
