HomeMy WebLinkAbout24-087 RESOLUTION NO. 24-087 A RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING MAY 2024 AS "MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH" IN ST. LUCIE COUNTY, FLORIDA WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida, has made the following determinations: 1. There is a proven connection between good mental health and overall personal health. 2. Only one out of two people with a serious form of mental illness seeks treatment for his or her mental illness. With early and effective interventions, those individuals with mental health conditions can recover and lead full, productive lives. 3. Surroundings can impact if, how,and when a person's needs are met,which in turn affects mental health. 4. People with mental illnesses recover if given the necessary services and support in their communities. 5. Research shows that the most effective way to reduce stigma is through personal contact with someone with a mental illness to alleviate the fear of discrimination. 6. People with mental illnesses make important contributions to our families and our communities. 7. Each business, school, government agency, health care provider, organization, and citizen share the burden of mental health in the community and has a responsibility to promote mental wellness and support prevention efforts. 8. Helping People Succeed is celebrating 60 years of service to the community. They have highly skilled therapists who provide specialized outpatient mental health counseling for children and adults. Through its diversified, effective program services and initiatives, hundreds of the most vulnerable local children, families and adults have been able to transform their lives through education,counseling, training and employment. 9. For 25 years, Suncoast Mental Health Center has been serving the community and promoting mental wellness through a holistic approach to mental health care that nurtures the child,affirms the adolescent and empowers the adult and family. Client-focused, community-based and family-centered services are offered to underserved Treasure Coast residents to inspire hope and healing throughout the local community. 10. Greater public awareness about mental health can change negative attitudes and behaviors toward people with mental illnesses. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida does hereby proclaim the month of May 2024 as"MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH"in St. Lucie County, Florida and urges all citizens to recommit our community to increasing awareness and understanding of mental illnesses, reducing stigma and discrimination, and promoting appropriate and accessible services for all people with mental illnesses.
