A RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING THE MONTH OF OCTOBER 2024 AS "NATIONAL DOMESTIC
VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH" IN ST. LUCIE COUNTY, FLORIDA
WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida, has made
the following determinations:
1. Domestic violence is a pervasive issue that transcends all ethnic, racial, and
socioeconomic boundaries. It is a pattern of behavior involving physical, emotional,
sexual, or economic abuse perpetrated by an intimate partner.
2. The home, a place intended to be a sanctuary, is often the site of domestic violence,
making it a hidden crime with devastating impacts on individuals, families, and
communities right here in our own county.
3. Each year in the United States, more than 10 million women and men experience
physical abuse by their intimate partner. 90%of children of domestic violence victims
are eyewitnesses to these attacks, which may be a major precursor to fatalities from
child abuse and neglect in the U.S.
4. October is designated as National Domestic Violence Awareness Month to raise
awareness about this critical issue, encourage prevention efforts, and support
survivors.
5. It is essential to acknowledge the courage of survivors who break the cycle of abuse
and seek help, and to commend the dedicated professionals who provide support
and services to victims.
6. St. Lucie County prosecutors, law enforcement officers, and victim advocates are
committed to creating a safe and supportive environment for all residents, and to
working collaboratively with community partners to prevent domestic violence and
provide support to survivors.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie
County, Florida that this Board does hereby proclaim the month of October 2024 as
"NATIONAL DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH" in St. Lucie County, Florida and
furthermore, expresses appreciation for those committed to promoting peace and
preventing domestic violence in the community.
