A RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING THE MONTH OF OCTOBER 2024
AS "FIRE PREVENTION MONTH" IN ST. LUCIE COUNTY, FLORIDA
WHEREAS,the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida, has made the
following determinations:
1. St. Lucie County Fire District is committed to ensuring the safety and security of all those
living in and visiting our area.
2. Fire is a serious public safety concern both locally and nationally, and homes are the
locations where people are at greatest risk from fire.
3. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), home fires killed 2,700
people in the United States in 2022 and fire departments responded to 360,000 home fires.
4. Roughly three out of five fire deaths happen in homes with either no smoke alarms or
with no working smoke alarms. Working smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in reported home
fires almost in half. Smoke alarms detect smoke quickly and alert danger in the event of fire in
which there is as little as 2 minutes to escape safely.
5. St. Lucie County residents should install smoke alarms in every sleeping room, outside
each separate sleeping area, and on every level of the home and should make sure the smoke
alarms meet the needs of all family members, including those with sensory or physical
disabilities.
6. St. Lucie County residents are responsive to public education measures and are able to
take personal steps to increase their safety from fire, especially in their homes.
7. The 2024 Fire Prevention Month theme, "Smoke alarms: Make them work for you!"
effectively serves to remind St. Lucie County residents the importance of having working smoke
alarms in the home.
8. St. Lucie County Fire District observed "Fire Prevention Week" October 6, 2024—October
12, 2024.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie
County, Florida:
1. This Board does hereby proclaim October 2024 as "Fire Prevention Month" in St. Lucie
County, Florida.
2. This Board urges all citizens and residents of St. Lucie County to make sure their homes
have working smoke alarms and to participate in the many public safety and fire
prevention activities offered during Fire Prevention Month seeking to reduce the great
loss of life and property caused by fires.
PASSED AND DULY ADOPTED this 15th day of October 2024.
