A RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING THE MONTH OF SEPTEMBER 2025 AS
"ALZHEIMER'S AWARENESS MONTH" IN ST. LUCIE COUNTY, FLORIDA
WHEREAS,the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida, has made the
following determinations:
1. Alzheimer's disease, a progressive neurodegenerative brain disorder, tragically robs
individuals of their memories and leads to progressive mental and physical impairments.
2. 7.2 million Americans are living with Alzheimer's disease, including an estimated 500,000
under age 65 living with younger-onset Alzheimer's disease; included in this number are
an estimated 580,000 individuals in the State of Florida of which an estimated 10,500
reside in St. Lucie County.
3. Alzheimer's is the seventh leading cause of death in America.
4. Alzheimer's disease is the only cause of death among the top ten causes of death in
America that cannot be prevented, cured or even slowed.
5. In 2025 in the US, nearly 12 million caregivers provided an estimated 18 billion hours of
unpaid care valued at more than 413 billion dollars; in Florida, over 870,000 caregivers
provided over 1.4 billion hours of unpaid care valued at an estimated 29 billion dollars.
6. Alzheimer's disease is one of the most expensive diseases in the United States and in 2025
the direct costs to American society of caring for those with Alzheimer's disease will total
an estimated 413 billion dollars.
7. The human cost of Alzheimer's disease is immeasurable and in recognition of the
individuals, families, friends, and caregivers dealing with Alzheimer's disease, the
researchers who are seeking a cause or cure.
8. Alzheimer's Association strives to raise funds and promote awareness to fight Alzheimer's
disease and related disorders,thereby improving the quality of human life for those living
with Alzheimer's disease and their caregivers.
9. World Alzheimer's Day is on September 21st.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie
County, Florida does hereby proclaim the month of September 2025 as "ALZHEIMER'S
AWARENESS MONTH" in St. Lucie County, Florida.
PASSED AND DULY ADOPTED this 16th day of September 2025.
