A RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING JULY 15,2026 AS
"GLIOBLASTOMA AWARENESS DAY"IN ST.LUCIE COUNTY,FLORIDA
WHEREAS,the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida, has made the following
determinations:
1.Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most aggressive, complex, and treatment-resistant form of primary brain
cancer, accounting for more than half of all malignant primary brain tumors diagnosed in adults. It is
often described as a disease that attacks the "essence of self," affecting memory, personality, speech,
mobility, and other vital functions, while presenting extraordinary challenges to treatment due to the
delicate nature of the brain.
2.Approximately 14,000 Americans will be diagnosed with glioblastoma in 2026, and more than 10,000
individuals are expected to lose their lives to this devastating disease. Despite decades of research,
glioblastoma remains one of the deadliest cancers,with a median survival of approximately 8 months and
a 5-year survival rate of only 7%. Brain cancer patients face some of the highest out-of-pocket medical
expenses among all cancer diagnoses, creating significant financial and emotional burdens for families.
3.Patients, caregivers, clinicians, researchers, and advocates play a critical role in advancing research,
improving quality of life,and accelerating the search for more effective treatments and ultimately a cure.
There is a critical need to increase public awareness of glioblastoma, support patients and families
affected by the disease, and encourage greater investment in research, innovation, and treatment
development.
4.There are currently no screening or early detection methods for glioblastoma, and although scientific
advances continue to provide hope, significant obstacles remain in developing effective therapies. Since
glioblastoma was first identified in medical literature more than a century ago, only a limited number of
therapies have been approved specifically for its treatment,while mortality rates have changed little over
the past three decades.
5.Glioblastoma Awareness Day honors patients, survivors, caregivers, and loved ones, remembers those
who have lost their lives to this disease,and recognizes the dedicated professionals and advocates working
tirelessly to improve outcomes for those affected.
6.Local organizations including the B.R.A.I.N. (Bringing Resources and Information Now) Cancer
Foundation of the Treasure Coast, Beauty4Brains, and the Tori Rose Foundation provide vital support,
education, advocacy, and hope to brain tumor patients and their families throughout our community. As
part of its mission, the B.R.A.I.N. Cancer Foundation of the Treasure Coast travels annually to
Washington, D.C.,to advocate for increased federal funding for glioblastoma research, raise awareness,
and promote legislative action on behalf of brain tumor patients nationwide.
NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County,
Florida does hereby proclaim July 15,2026,as"Glioblastoma Awareness Day"in St.Lucie County,Florida.
