HomeMy WebLinkAbout02-164RESOLUTION NO. 02-164 A RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING AUGUST 3, 2002, AS "SUNNIER PALMS' 10TM ANNIVERSARY DAY" IN ST. LUCIE COUNTY, FLORIDA WHEREAS,'the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida, has made the following determinations: 1. In August, Sunnier Palms' Naturist Community & Wildlife Sanctuary will celebrate the 10th anniversary of the purchase of land in St. Lucie County. 2. From I948 until 1984 Sunny Palms, a nudist park owned by one individual was located in Florida City, Florida. When that property was sold, many of the members formed a Steering Committee to search for the perfect land to relocate. 3. So as to secure the land use in perpetuity, in 1988, members organized a Florida not-for- profit corporation, Sunnier Palms Members' Lodge, Inc. Its purpose, among others, was to provide recreational and athletic facilities for its members, their families, and their guests, as well as a residential community for nudists who wish to live in harmony with nature and one another. 4. After an eight year land search, with the help of hundreds of volunteers, the Steering committee confidently decided on 26 acres in rural St. Lucie County. The purchase included a 5 acre RV Campground, a roadside grocery store, a 3 bedroom house, a small agricultural area and the gem of the purchase, a 12 acre Native pine forest. In support of the Steering Committee's chosen location, Naturists (nudists) from all over the country made interest free loans to the Sunnier corporation and in August 1992, the corporation purchased the land. 5. Since that time, Sunnier membership has grown from the original 8 families to more than 100 members. More than 20 families have made Sunnier their year round home, dozens of snowbirds make Sunnier their Winter home. 6. Due to Sunnier's acceptance in the worldwide Naturist/nudist community, thousands of nudists from all over the world have visited for the day and/or stayed on Sunnier's RV vacation sites, or tented in Sunnier's woods. 7. During the past 10 years, Sunnier members have tried to be active participants in the exciting positive and smart growth of St. Lucie County and we look forward to continuing that pro- active participation, as St. Lucie County continues to grow in the positive and smart way of our shared future. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida: 1. This Board does hereby proclaim August 3, 2002, as "SUNNIER PALMS' 10TM ANNIVERSARY DAY" in St. Lucie County, Florida. 2. St. Lucie County is grateful to Sunnier Palms Naturist Community & Wildlife Sanctuary for its pro-active participation in our community and economic benefit Sunnier brings to the community, by attracting, peaceful, eco-tourists to our area and its businesses.
