A RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING MARCH 22, 2003,
AS "HISTORIC WHITE CITY'S 110th ANNIVERSARY"
IN ST. LUCIE COUNTY, FLORIDA 1893-2003
WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida, has made
the following determinations:
1. Louis Albert Francois Pio was a Danish settler in Florida and in charge of the
Florida Exhibit at the 1892 Columbian World Exposition to commemorate Columbus' arrival
in America; commonly called the "Chicago World's Fair".
2. White City derived its name from City Beautiful designed by Architect Daniel
Burnham. All the buildings were painted white for the Chicago World Fair, and white lights
were used. Midway Road was named after the midway of that long ago fair, and Plo
purchased land by State Deed #14903, thereby establishing White City.
3. In 1893, White City was planned and laid out with streets 125 foot wide with
20 foot alleyways for deliveries., and the White City Improvement Club was incorporated in
1905 while part of Brevard County.
4. In 1905, St. Lucie County was formed and White City was part of the County
with Fort Pierce as the County Seat.
5. Originally White City was designed to be home to 5,000 people, but today,
only a few days before its 110th Anniversary, White City has approximately 20,000 residents.
6. This Board believes Historic White City should be recognized onit's 110th
Anniversary.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County Commissioners
of St. Lucie County, Florida:
1. This Board does hereby proclaim Saturday, March 22, 2003, as "HISTORIC
WHITE CITY'S 110th ANNIVERSARY" in St. Lucie County, Florida.
2. This Board acknowledges the many hours White City residents have given for the
betterment of St. Lucie County, and urges the citizens of St. Lucie County to participate
in the activities scheduled for Saturday, March 22, 2003, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at
the White City Improvement Club Building where historical displays, musical entertainment,
activities for the children and food will be available for the citizens of St. Lucie County
to enjoy.
PASSED AND DULY ADOPTED this 18th day of March, 2003.
