LAUDERbALE, FLOI~DA WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida, has made the following determinations: 1. Established in 1845 as one of the first acts of our founding state legislature, the 5tare Library of Florida is the repository of our state's rich history. 2. The Division of Library and ]:nformation Services and the 5tare Library of Florida, provide services and perform tasks essential to maintaining educated citizens. 3. Dispersing the historical and unique 5tare Library Collection to other institutions and agencies will make it difficult for residents to have free and easy access to information about Florida's history, culture, and life in a variety of formats under the guidance of a qualified, knowledgeable staff. 4. Closing the Legislative Services in the Capitol and dismissing the Collection Development staff will restrict Florida residents' access to important legislative information. 5. The proposed relocating of the extremely large multi-million dollar collection of materials in the 5tare Library of Florida to another location will be very costly. 6. F~overnor ,TeD Bush has proclaimed that Florida is an education state, but -]- dispersing the functions of the Division of Library and ]:nformation Services without the knowledgeable, qualified staff to other government agencies will have a detrimental effect on the historical, cultural, and documentary materials available to Florida residents to increase their knowledge. 7. The Division of Library and Znformation Services has succeeded in developing materials and valuable consulting services that enhance the lives and educational levels of Florida residents in all walks of life. 8. Dispersing the responsibilities of the Division of Library and Tnformation Services, dispensing with exceptionally qualified staff, and moving the 5tare Library of Florida to another location is neither cost effective nor efficient. 9. Tt will be extremely difficult to undo the damage created by this proposal and to make the Division and the State Library Collection whole again. NOW, THEREFORE, BE TT RESOLVED by the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucia County, Florida: 1. This Board does hereby oppose Governor .Tab Bush's plan to move the 5tare Library's Circulating Collection to Nova University in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, and urges Members of the Florida Legislature to decline to implement this portion of the Governor's proposed budget. 2. The County Administrator is hereby directed to forward a copy of this resolution to Governor ~Teb Bush, and Members of the Florida Legislature. -2- After motion and second the vote on this resolution was as follows: Chairman Cliff Barnes Vice Chairman Paula A.
