HomeMy WebLinkAbout03-098RESOLUTION NO. 03-98 A RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING THE MONTH OF APRIL, 2003, AS "ALCOHOL AWARENESS MONTH" IN ST. LUCIE COUNTY, FLORIDA WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida, has made the following determinations: 1. Alcohol is a factor in the four leading causes of death among persons ages ten - twenty-four(10- 24); motor-vehicle crashes, unintentional injuries, homicide and suicide. 2. Approximately ninepoint seven (9.7) million current drinkers in the United States are between the ages of twelve- twenty (12- 20). 3. Young people begin drinking on average, at thirteen point one (13.1) years of age; and alcohol is the most frequently used drug by high-school seniors. 4. Young people who begin drinking before age fifteen (15) are four (4) times more likely to develop alcohol dependence than those who begin drinking at age twenty-one (21). 5. Alcohol abuse is linked to as many as two-thirds (2/3) of all sexual assaults and date rapes of teens and college students and is a major factor in unprotected sex among youth, increasing their risk of contracting H1V or other transmitted diseases. 6. The typical American young person will see 100,000 beer commercials before he or she tums eighteen (18) years old (that is more than for sneakers, gum and jeans). 7. Thirteen (13) percent of all youth, ages twelve to seventeen (12- 17), had at least one (1) serious problem related to drinking in the past year. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida: 1. This Board does hereby proclaim the momh of April, 2003, as "ALCOHOL AWARENESS MONTH" in St. Lucie County, Florida. 2. This Board urges the citizens of St. Lucie County, along with parents, governmental agencies, public and private institutions, businesses, hospitals, and schools to support efforts that will encourage recovery throughout our community.
