A RESOLUTION COMMENDING PROFESSOR
EMERITUS DR. DAVID V. CALVERT ON HIS
DEDICATED FORTY-TWO (42) YEAR CAREER
AT T~EUNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA, INDIAN
RIVER RESEARCH ANDEDUCATION CENTER,
FORMERLY AS PROFESSOR OF SOIL AND
WATER SCIENCES
WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners of St. Lucie
County, Florida, ha~ made the following determinations:
1. On June 30, 2003, Dr. David V. Calvert retired from his
position of Professor of Soil and Water Sciences at the University
of Florida, Indian River Research and Education Center (IRREC), Ft.
Pierce, Florida. He currently holds the position Professor
Emeritus, and officially retired on June 30, 2003.
2. Dr. David V. Calvert received a B.S. degree in Agronomy
and M.S. degree in Agronomy (Soils) from the University of
Kentucky. He received a Ph.D degree in Soil Science from Iowa
State University in 1962.
3. He started his career at the Indian River Research and
Education Center in 1962 as an Assistant Professor and rose through
the ranks becoming a Professor in 1976. Dr, Calvert was appointed
Acting Center Director of the Indian River Research and Education
Center in 1978 and served as Director for an additional seventeen
(17) years.
4. Dr. Calver% has developed an international, national, and
statewide reputation in soil fertility research and water
management research with citrus. His major citrus research
contributions are in the areas of soil fertility, soil-water
management, and soal chemistry as related to mineral nutrition,
best management practices, and environmental issues. These
investigations have been published widely and his contributions and
excellence in mineral nutrition and soil fertility are recognized
internationally, nationally, and statewide. For these
contributions, Dr. Calvert's research was recognized by the Florida
Fruit and Vegetable Association in 1979 when he received their
Research Achievement Award. In 1983 he was presented the
Outstanding Conservationist Award for St. Lucie County.
5. In 1997 Dr. Calvert was named Distinguished Out-of-State
Alumnus for the University of Kentucky, College of Agriculture. He
received a Honorary Membership in the Florida State Horticultural
Society in 1997, aRd was also inducted into the St. Lucie County
Farm Bureau Agricultural Hall of Fame that year.
6. Dr. Calvert has been an active member of the American
Society of Agronomy, Soil Science Society of America, Florida State
Horticultural Society, and the Soil and Crop Science Society of
Florida, serving in various leadership roles in these societies.
He is a Certified Professional Agronomist and Soil Scientist.
7. In 1999 Dr. Calvert was named a Fellow of the American
Society of Agronomy and today he continues to lead well-funded
research projects designed to develop, evaluate, and demonstrate
environmentally sensitive best management practices for citrus.
Dr. Calvert served as President of the Soil and Crop Science
Society of Florida in 2000.
NOW, THEREFORe, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County
Commissioners of St. Lucie County, Florida:
1. This Board does hereby commend Dr. David V. Calvert on his
dedicated forty-two (42) year career at the University of Florida,
Indian River Research and Education Center, formerly as Professor
of Soil & Water Sciences.
2. This Board believes Dr. David V. Calvert should be
recognized for his outstanding dedication and service to the
citizens of St. Lucie County and the University of Florida, Indian
River Research and Education Center, Ft. Pierce, Florida.
3. This Board requests its Chairman to present a copy of this
resolution to Dr. David V. Calvert, Professor Emeritus, at his
Retirement Luncheor. on Wednesday, August 13, 2003 at the Indian
River Research and Education Center at 11:30 a.m.
PASSED AND DULY ADOPTED this 12th day of August, 2003.
