Just touching base.
Any tentative date for another meeting?
Had planned to meet with Comms in February about history and the economy but have been put
waaaay behind with MiL's heart issues January through February.
Understood from the last "meeting" that economic development should be involved. If that is the
case should I meet with them before going to the BOCC? Any change or progress in that direction
on your end? Trying to follow proper procedures is usually my first option and usually bow to
procedural and political realities as understood by staff since I am no longer plugged into
government. Would appreciate if you would check with Leslie about this and advise.

Subject: Indian Hills Golf Course Archaeological Assessment
Kori,
Attached is a copy of our report on the archaeological assessment conducted at the Indian Hills Golf Course in
2004, which you had mentioned you were unable to locate in your files. Parts of it including the survey log were
updated so that it could be submitted to the Florida Master Site File.
In the light of information provided by that assessment, we updated the site forms in the 2003 Archaeological
and Historical Survey of Old Fort Park to more accurately depict the locations of SU and SU 1. Hard copies of
those reports will be mailed to you and to FMSF next week.
Please contact us if you have any questions.

Re: Indian Hills Golf Course Archaeological Sites
Dear Mr. Benton
As you have indicated that this letter report, submitted to your agency in 2004, is not on file I am
readdressing it to you, and enclosing the associated maps and site forms.
In 2004 as part of an archaeological survey of Fort Pierce, the Archaeological and Historical
Conservancy conducted an assessment of the Indian Hills Golf Course, specifically a f ten -acre area
on the northeast perimeter that was relatively unaffected by redevelopment of the golf course. That
assessment resulted in the documentation of two previously unrecorded archaeological sites: a
prehistoric midden (8SL3269) likely associated with the Fort Pierce Mound/Midden (8SL3), and a
segment/staging area of the historic military trail (8SL3270) associated with Fort Pierce (8SL31).
These two sites are located in the northeast portion of the golf course abutting the Florida East Coast
Railway corridor. Both sites are of local significance and are potentially eligible for listing in the
National Register of Historic Places. The Fort Pierce site, 8SL31, was listed in the NRHP in 1974.
It is strongly recommended that these sites be adequately protected from future ground -disturbing
activities. Any ground -disturbing activities there should be monitored by a professional archaeologist.
Sincerely,
Robert Carr

Historical Commission item
Sarah,
I'm sending this to you for whenever there is another Historical Commission meeting.
I received a call from Jeanne Hearn expressing interest in designating Tozour Road as an historic road since it was the old
alignment of US1. She is not so much interested in the designation as an official measure, but more for public
information, such as placing a sign on the roadway or at the entrance to the Savannah Preserve, and maybe a summary
in the environmental brochure for the preserve. I thought this would be a good discussion item for the Historical
Commission and that perhaps one of them would be willing to do some research and write up a summary that could be
used for a sign or brochure.
Thanks,
Kara

Hey John,
We talked about this one a while back. Please review and see if it is something you all can do/approve. I am thinking of
putting two up (one at each end) locations TBD. This is a draft/sketch we can tweak it and determine size later.

RE: Jim Scrub
Excellent research and suggestions, Janet. Initial thoughts
I like honoring the Seminole naming by simply referring to it as Jim Scrub. Not sure how the tribe will feel about a place
they named after a murderer to then be named after their people. Do we have a contact at the Seminole Tribe where
we can ask them about the change? Maybe the THPO?
Regarding the cut, were you able to find any Spanish maps with the cut named from the relevant period? If it was
named Negro Cut (Black Cut) after the fact that the water in that deeper cut was darker than the surrounding cuts, is it a
derogatory name per the Statute? If it is found that it's still a derogatory name, I like your suggestion to call it the
Capron Cut, as it appears to be lined up with Fort Capron, and would have been the most likely route to that Fort (and
possibly the reason for Fort Capron to be developed where it was.) The place name could help tell the story of the early
development of our community. But Black Cut or Blackwater Cut could be a more direct translation while avoiding
derogatory names as well.
Let's bring this to the next meeting of the Historic Preservation Commission for recommendation to the BOCC.

Subject: FW: Jim Scrub
I have attached some scans from the book "A Portrait of St. Lucie County, Florida" by Lucille Rieley Rights that Peter had,
telling the story of how the scrub got its name as well as some historical maps that Diana forwarded to me and JoAnn. I
paged through the book in hopes of finding history on the 2 names up for evaluation. While Diana suggested
a geological based name as well as a historical name for the scrub, the article states the scrub was originally named by
the Seminoles. Possible naming options could be:
Scrub options:
Jim Scrub (just dropping the "negro" from the name).
Wind Clan Scrub (orjust "Wind Scrub"). The Wind Clan women minus one were killed by Jim.
Note that Van Swearingen was a non -Indian name. The Fort and the Creek (existing place name) are approximately 5
miles south of the scrub. There is currently a place name of Van Swearingen Creek.
Negro Cut options:
Blackwater Cut - water is deepest of all the inlets in the area and hence "black".
Capron Cut - ships entering from the ocean to go to Ft Capron would have most likely taken the deepest, shortest,
widest way through.
Tarpon Cut - that's what kinds of fish were in that area.
I have checked the name options against the Bureau of Geographic Names database, and do not see any duplication.

Joann,
I wanted to relay my thoughts related to the renaming of the scrub ridge north of Bluefield ranch, that needs a new map
name.
I reviewed the Cypress Creek/Trail Ridge original application which had references to various names for scrub in the area
and historic sites. I have seen that scrub ridge identified as the Osceola Plain and the Orlando Ridge.
Van Swearingen Fort is located to the south on or close to Bluefield Ranch site. There is also a Van Swearingen Slough
on the Bluefield Ranch site, so Van Swearingen Scrub would like it to that historical name. However I would note that
according to my records the Fort was only occupied for 6 months to a year — so not very long.
"Trail Ridge" is another possibility. I thought the name came from a feature or historical name or event, but I cannot
find any mention of it in my files. Even so, it is the name of a regional and federal project associated that includes that
scrub ridge.
Attached are old maps. The military map shown a trail running along the ridge, which according to my file is the Orlando
Ridge. That may be where the Trail Ridge came from for the Cypress Creek/Trail Ridge project.
Sincerely,
Diana Waite, AICP
