The original conclusion by the electrical contractor was that the main disconnect was faulty;and simply needed to be replaced. Since power has been restored, it is obvious that the origin of the problem was not faulty equipment, but an overloaded service. The contractor stated to me that he has' blown 2 fuses already and has to keep some of the units off to keep that from happening. An ampere reading on the service indicated 425 -amps at one time, well over the 400 amp rating of the service. Therefore, I advised the contractor that corrections would need to be made, either by increasing the current service or by adding an additional service to handle some of the load. I also advised that he would need to submit a plan describing which method they will use for the repair to be reviewed by the building department -for code compliance. The new equipment is working, by tripping the fuse when overloaded, but I recommend that there be a time limit established for this repair with the owner and contractor, thus avoiding another overload that could cause a fire.
