Public Safety Coordinating Council July 27, 2017 Page s UPDATE by SLC SherriffOs Office- Major Tighe on behalf of Sheriff Mascara: Major Tighe reported the current population to be 1293 and the average yearly population at 1287 with 50 Federal Inmates in custody. Major Tighe distributed an article from the Department of Justice on the survey of jails and prisons which reported 40% of these facilities nationally have mentally ill inmates which translates St. Lucie County Jail to be at 400 of the population. Demographics of population have changed from the elder population last year to excessive gang members and juveniles are on the rise along with opiate arrests. Cases are coming back for appeal after 30 years which bring its own issues along with that. There is an insurgent of cocaine and crack cocaine back on the street. Lastly on a side note, Major Tighe reported there is legislation in Washington DC coming out of California for bail bond reform. UPDATE by Criminal Justice Coordinator -Roy Hudson Mr. Hudson reported the Drug Lab has a new analyzer up and running smooth and in the upcoming week the Criminal Justice Division will be fully staffed for the first time in six months. JUDICIAL UPDATE by Myra Zilahy on behalf of Chief Judge Metagers Myra Zilahy is the new Deputy Court Administrator for the circuit who introduced herself and passed along that the new judicial assignments will be out in September. OLD BUSINESS- None NEW BUSINESS - Mr. Romano announced that New Horizons is hosting an Opioid Task Force Meeting in August and invitations went out to the four counties and he welcomed all around the table to attend. Update on last legislative session cut funds from the base which will cut services. The exact number is not known yet. Mr. Romano could not confirm but heard 54 million was swapped out for opioid use. Mr. Colton asked if anyone else had anything and with that Diamond Litty requested that Major Tighe get her a list of inmates in the jail that are there for resentencing.
