HX "Pancake" Air Handier Combination Ratings Agents for: 4W With the recent code change to the 14.0 SEER minimum most of the US manufacturers have released new air conditioning and heat pump products. First Company continues to evaluate combination ratings for these new products with First Company air handlers as they are released. Unfortunately the Engineering Department has found, almost without exception, the new 14.0 SEER condensing units and heat pumps don't match up well with the most common HX (pancake) air handlers. The problem is the higher SEER outdoor units need to be matched with larger (physical size) evaporator coils to make the rating. in most cases the older "standard" HX air handlers will need to be replaced with the next sire larger HX air handler model to make the rating. As an example: the most popular model, 24HX5, must now be replaced (in most cases) with a 25HX5 model to obtain a 14.0 SEER certified combination rating. The 25HX5 model is 6" wider than the 24HX5 model making the replacement in many cases extremely difficult and expensive for the homeowner. After a number of discussions with the State of Florida, Broward County and the Palm Beach County mechanical departments, we've been able to find a solution for this problem. The current Florida Mechanical Code contains an exclusion (attached) for space constrained applications. This is the same exclusion we've been using for the replacement of the popular thru-the-wall condensing units. For air handler "space constrained applications" (those where the installation of the next larger size air handier requires extensive modification to the structure) the county building departments are willing to review and approve these installations on a case -lay -case basis. In the absence of a written procedure i recommend the following: ■ include a photo or drawing of the air handier installation and include it when applying for a permit. It will be helpful for the building departments if a brief explanation and/or dimensions are included. • Request and include a letter of compatibility from us (Technical Sales Consultants, Inc.) • Also include a copy of the code exclusion (attached) ■ The building department will review the permit application as usual. Once the installation is complete it will be inspected as usual. The installation will be approved providing the mechanical inspector agrees the application was "space constrained." ■ Please contact the building department responsible for each specific address with questions prior to moving forward with an installation While this solution to the rating issue may not be perfect, it's very good of the building departments to work with dealers and homeowners to provide an avenue to replace/upgrade their systems without the need for expensive modifications to their homes. Thermal efficiency standards are set forthe following building systems where new products are installed or replaced in existing buildings and for which a permit must be obtained.
