Report No.: 01-37911.04
Test Date: 09/01/00
Report Date: 11/07/03
Project Summary: Architectural Testing, Inc. (ATI) was contracted by Style Crest
Manufacturing, Inc. to conduct structural performance tests on a five riser, four tread and built in
landing, self supporting fiberglass Dura-Grip II, step unit. The system was evaluated for the
design load requirements and dimensional requirements only of the following building codes and
standards:
BOCA-1999 - Building Officials and Code Administrators (Reference ASCE 7-95)
UBC-1997 / ICBO - International Conference of Building Officials
SBC-1997 / SBCCI - Southern Building Code Conference International
International Residential Code, 2000
International Residential Code, 2003
Residential Code of New York State, 2002
Florida Building Code, 2001 (Revised 2003)
North Carolina Residential Code, 2002
Test Specimen (Step Assembly) Description: The step unit was fabricated with a pressure
treated lumber framework and a layer of fiberglass over the entire structure. The step unit was
38" wide and had an overall height of 35". The five risers were each 7" high. The four treads
were each 11-1/2" deep. The landing was 38-1/2" deep to the nosing. The leading edge, tread
radius measured less than 9/16" (see attached photographs for visual clarification of step
structure). The manufacturer provided all components and fasteners comprising the test
specimen.

Test Procedures: The following tests were performed on the step structure for the requirements
of each code or standard as referenced.
Tests Conducted:
Stairway dimension verification in accordance with the following:
A) International Residential Code, 2000
B) CABO, 1995
C) Standard Building Code, 1999
D) Uniform Building Code, 1997
E) BOCA, 1999
F) International Residential Code, 2003
G) Residential Code of New York State, 2002
H) North Carolina Residential Code, 2002
1) Florida Building Code, 2001 (Revised 2003)
2. 300 lb treadload over 4 sq. in. (design load) test performed on the center of stair tread.
Loading and Measurement Procedure: The loads were applied to the components of the
system following ATI's Test Procedure. All deflection measurements were taken using
electronic deflection transducers.
Equipment: The components were loaded using a hydraulic press with an electrical load cell for
measurement of each load.
Test Results: The following tables list the results of data collected during testing and compare it
to the appropriate code requirement.

Test Summary:
Test 1 - Dimension Verification: The deck structure met all of the listed code requirements
for dimensional acceptance.
Test 2 - Vertical Load: (300 lb t•eadload over 4 sq. in.) The stair tread achieved the 2x
design load as required by code agencies with a recovery of 83%. The stair tread also
achieved the 2.5x design load as required by BOCA without structural failure.

RE: Review ATI test report on fiberglass coated plywood steps for
compliance with the most recent code versions
Dear Mr. Johnson:
We have received the test report you submitted from Architectural Testing (ATI), York, PA. The details
are as follows:
Report number: 01-37911.04, dated 11/7/03
Title: Step Performance Test Report
Products covered: 4-Tread, Dura-Grip II, Step Unit [A five riser, four tread step fabricated with
pressure treated lumber and fiberglass].
At your request, we have evaluated the test report against the building codes outlined below.

(2) The tested values have been taken from the referenced ATI test report, RADCO
has not independently verified any of the actual dimensions, and is not responsible for
the accuracy of these dimensions.
CONCLUSION:
There have either been no changes in the dimensional requirements in the IBC, IRC and the FBC or,
as in the case of the Tread Leading Edge Radius, the requirements have been altered minimally, when
compared to the requirements listed in the referenced ATI test report number 01-37911.04, dated
11/7/03. The product is therefore in compliance with the dimensional requirements of the editions of
the IBC, IRC and the FBC referenced above for the four (4) dimensions shown in the tables.
st that this proposal has been responsive to your objectives. Please do not hesitate to call if you have
any questions. As always, we look forward to working with Style Crest and to starting this program in
the near future. This proposal is valid for 90 days.

RADCO
