REQUEST FOR REDUCTION OF CALCULATED OCCUPANT LOAD
Mr: McGuinness:
The Unique nature of the use of the facility noted above is as a temporary shelter for stray or
confiscated dogs and cats. Human occupancy of the structure will be limited to the
management and care of the animals and will requirea very small staff. Please accept this
letter as a formal request for a reduction of the calculated Occupant Load. I have been
informed through the St. Lucie County Public Safety Director that the shelter operation will
require no more than 15 staff members at any given time.
The basis for this request falls under the 2017 Florida Building Code- Building, 6th Edition,
Chapter 10 Means of Egress, Section 1004 Occupant Load, 1004.1.2 Areas without fixed
seating, Exception: "Where approved by the building official, the actual number of occupants

determined by calculation, shall be permitted to be used in the determination of the design
occupant load."
