Response: Check Engineer: Blair Hildahl, EI Response: 1. Ground Floor hired Tommy Taveras, PE to go to site to review problem. Tommy took pictures and wrote report and forwarded to Ground Floor. 2. Ground Floor reviewed all structural design drawings for this project. 3. Ground Floor re -calculated all loads influencing the CMU columns in question 4. The CMU column strength was calculated and was found to be adequate for joist girder load. 5. The concrete column cap bearing strength was calculated and was found to be adequate. 6. The footing size was calculated and was found to be adequate. 7. The bearing plate detail from the steel fabricator's shop drawings was reviewed, calculated and found to be adequate. 8. The lateral expansion of the building was reviewed. Further information required: 1. Please provide Ground Floor with a schedule of when column caps were poured and when joist girders were set. 2. Please provide Ground Floor with concrete strength report of concrete used for column caps. 3. Please provide Ground Floor with detail of horizontal reinforcing that was used between CMU wall and CMU column. Solution: Install HSS section between existing footing and joist girder. See attached details The HSS section was designed to handle 100% of the joist girder load. 1. cut slab on grade. Remove concrete/fill until top of footing is cleared 2. insert HSS column from top of footing to joist girder. Contractor will need to cut enough slab to slide column in place while in vertical position. 3. fasten base plate to exist footing (see detail) — use epoxy bolts 4. faster top plate to exist joist girder (see detail).. 5. no temporary shoring is required. 61163 round Floor"Engineering 10/11/06 CONT.
