If an automatic sprinkler system is not provided, the following requirements will be necessary. a. All corridors shall be constructed with materials having a one (1) hour fire resistance rating and all openings protected with a Class E 20 minute rated listed door and jamb assembly. b. The Janitor's closet shall be constructed of materials having a one (1) hour fire resistance rating. The openings shall be protected with'a Class C 3/4 hour listed door and jamb assembly. c. All penetrations by ducts through rated wall assemblies shall be protected with a fire damper. 3. Provide additional illuminated exit signs as indicated in red on the plans. 4. See the requirements for permitting the automatic sprinkler system. 5. Provide a 2A--10B rated fire extinguisher for each 75' of travel. Because the A/C units service spaces in excess of 25,000 cubic feet in total air volume, compliance to NFPA #90A will be required. b. NFPA #90A requires listed duct type smoke detectors to be installed in the supply systems of greater than 2000 CFM capacity. C. Smoke detectors shall automatically stop their respective fan(s) upon detecting the presence of smoke. d. Smoke detectors shall be installed in accordance with NFPA #72, When listed duct type smoke detectors are installed in a building not equipped with an approved protective signaling system: 1. It shall cause a visual and an audible signal in a normally occupied area, and 2. LUCIE COUNTY BUREAU OF FIRE PREVENTION TELEPHONE: (407)462-2312 FAX: (407)462-2326 AUTOMATIC FIRE SPRINKLER SYSTEMS The St. Lucie County Fire Prevention Bureau enforces State Fire Marshal Rule 4-A-3.012 which requires compliance to the Department of Professional Regulation, Board of Professional engineers, Rule 21 - H, adopted January 1990. The following requirements are necessary for compliance when submitting automatic fire sprinkler plans for approval by the St. Lucie County Fire Prevention Bureau. 1. ENGINEER OF RECORD: The Florida Registered Professional Engineer for the automatic fire sprinkler system shall develop the sprinkler system design criteria, piping system concept for the system, shall preform the required engineering analysis and shall be responsible for the preparation and sealing of the fire sprinkler system construction documents. 2. The building architect shall furnish the St. Lucie county Fire Marshal a letter stating who the engineer of record will be. The architect is responsible for the entire building construction. No permit will be issued for the automatic sprinkler system until the Fire Marshall is receipt of this letter. 3. SPECIALTY ENGINEER: A Florida Registered Professional Engineer, not the Engineer of Record for the sprinkler system, may design a portion of the sprinkler system not within the expertise of the Engineer of Record, such as electrical controls, etc. 4. The engineer of record shall be responsible for the sprinkler design criteria, piping system concept, and the point of interface or the point of service which meets the requirements of the fire sprinkler system and applicable codes as defined in Florida Statutes 633.021, meaning that point at which the underground piping for the sprinkler system using water as the extinguishing agent becomes exclusively for the sprinkler system. The point of service shall be designated by the engineer of record who sealed the plans for a system of 50 or more heads. 5. The seal of a Registered Professional Engineer is not required for the design of additions, alterations or new fire sprinkler systems of 49 or fewer heads. 6. Fire sprinkler construction documents must be prepared by the engineer of record and shall include as a minimum all the items indicated by Rule 21 - H. 7. Fire sprinkler'system submittal. Prior to bidding. The Engineer of Record shall prepare and submit required approval and permitting documents to the respective building departments which are located in St. Lucie County. The City of Ft. Pierce, The City of Port St. Lucie. The St. Lucie County Building Department does not review sprinkler plans. Forward all plans and specifications directly to the St. Lucie Count Fire Marshal's office for permitting. 8. Three sets of plans, specifications, and calculations are required for permitting. The Engineer of Record shall be responsible for all necessary revisions as required. ,O Vr 9. The Engineer of Record submitting fire sprinkler systems design construction documents for public record shall sign, seal and date each page of all drawings, the first page of specifications and the cover page of calculations of the hydraulically designed system. 10. Drawings prepared by the installation contractor solely to serve as a guide for fabrication and installation and which do not materially change the intent of the engineering construction. documents do not require the seal of a professional engineer. 11. The successful bidder shall obtain a permit from the respectful building department after review by the Fire Marshal' office. ( Except for The St. Lucie County Building Department.) 11. A separate permit is required from the fire Marshal's office by the successful bidding contractor. The contractor shall furnish a copy of his (hers) state certification upon making application for the permit. 12 When the review is completed by the Fire Marshal's office the contractor must sign the Fire Prevention Bureau permit and submit the pink copy to the respective building department to receive their permit and the reviewed plans . • 13. The automatic sprinkler company qualifier shall sign for the permit, or a notarized letter must be presented at the time of making application stating the name of the person who may sign for the permit. .► 14. Renovations or alterations to an existing system requires a separate permit from the Fire Marshal's office when additional piping is added, changed or modified. 15. Installation: A. Installation shall be by a Florida licensed Fire Protection Contractor I or II. A certified contractor V is permitted to install the underground portion of the system from the point of service to one (1) foot above the finished floor. NOTE: A certified underground utilities contractor is not permitted to install any portion of a automatic sprinkler system. B. The fire protection systems contractor I or II installing the system shall supervise and be responsible for the complete system, except that a contractor V installing the underground piping shall supervise and be responsible only for that portion that he installs . C. If the above ground piping is installed by a contractor other than the one that installed the underground, the above ground contractor shall be responsible to obtain a copy of the underground test certificate from the underground contractor. D. Upon completion of the final inspection of the above ground piping, the contractor shall conduct tests and maintain on file the contractor's material and test certificate for the above ground piping as specified in N.F.P.A. # 13. E. The above ground systems contractor shall present copies of the test certification to the fire marshall upon competition of the hydrostatic test. F. The hydrostatic test shall be conducted for two (2) hours at 200 psi. G. The Fire Marshall requires 24 hour notice on all inspections.. �r 16. Duct tile iron, copper piping or polyvinyl chloride (PVC), AWWA-C-900 shall meet the minimum requirements of DR-14, Class 200 for critical use in fire lines. Underground piping shall be UL or FM listed. • NOTE: C-900, DR - 18, Class 150 is not permitted for underground sprinkler piping. 17. Compliance to N.F.P.A. 231 is required: A. For occupancies storing materials representing the broad range of combustibles up to 30 feet in height. • B. Storage of plastics (Groups B and C - all configurations Group A - free flowing only) up to. 30 feet in height. ' C. Storage of Group A plastics (except free flowing up to 25 feet in height). D. New Buildings and existing buildings that are converted to storage occupancy. 18. Compliance to N.F.P.A. 231C is required: ® A. For the storage of materials representing the broad range of combustibles stored over 12 feet in height on racks. B. For storage height of 12 feet or less, see N.F.P.A.13. 00 19. Monitoring of sprinkler systems: 1 © A. All automatic sprinkler systems shall be monitored by a Central Station Facility approved by the St. Lucie County Fire Marshal. Exception: N.F.P.A. 13-D systems are not required to be monitored. 20. Knox Box A. A Knox Box shall be installed and shall be located per direction of the Fire Marshal. The Knox Box shall contain an access key (s), so entry can be gained by emergency personnel to access the Automatic sprinkler system controls and the fire alarm control panel. 4
