Activities Observed:
1. Structural and Waterproofing Repairs
Kimley-Horn conducted a site visit to observe structural and waterproofing repairs on the Best Western
Hotel—Balcony Restoration project. Upon arriving on site, progress work was observed on the NE and
NW building blocks. The following observations were noted:
a. Progress was observed on spall areas where delaminated concrete had been removed and
concrete edges sawcut at 90 degrees. Surface preparation was observed to be in accordance
with the restoration plans and technical specification. (Reference Photos 1-2)
b. Kimley-Horn observed reinforcement with significant corrosion and loss of cross-sectional area
in some locations.Areas were identified by Kimley-Horn and marked by the contractor in the
field.Contractor shall notify Kimley-Horn of any other areas where significant amount of
material has been lost due to corrosion. Where section loss of reinforcing bars is more than
20% of the cross-sectional area, splice replacement bars to existing bars as directed by
Kimley-Horn. Remove additional concrete as necessary to provide at least a 0.75 in clearance
beyond existing and replacement or supplemental bars. Structural documented the updates
with pictures and Kimley-Horn found the splices acceptable. (Reference Photos 3-4)
c. More corroded or damaged electrical conduits were observed and shall be repaired/replaced
before applying the patching material. Damaged conduits were repaired/replaced by an
electrician hired by Best Western. Kimley-Horn requested Structural to provide a letterfrom
the electrician taking all the responsibilities for the repair/replace procedure performed on the
damaged electrical conduits. It's not the responsibility of Kimley-Horn to inspect nor approved
any electrical work performed in this project. (Reference Photos 5-8)
d. Reinforcement shall be cleaned and reviewed by Kimley-Horn before applying bonding agents
and patching material. Kimley-Horn requested the contractor to provide support chairs, and
holding bars properly spaced and with sufficient strength to carry loads of reinforcement and
deposited concrete without collapsing or allowing bars to sag.
