Structural and Waterproofing Repairs Kimley-Horn conducted a site visit to observe structural and waterproofing repairs on the Best Western Hotel—Balcony Restoration project. Upon arriving on site,progress work was observed on the NE and NW building blocks. The following observations were noted: a. Progress was observed on spall areas where delaminated concrete had been removed and concrete edges sawcut at 90 degrees. Surface preparation was observed to be in accordance with the restoration plans and technical specification. (Reference Photos 1-2) b. Kimley-Horn observed reinforcement with significant corrosion and loss of cross-sectional area in some locations.Areas were identified by Kimley-Horn and marked by the contractor in the field.Contractor shall notify Kimley-Horn of any other areas where significant amount of material has been lost due to corrosion. Where section loss of reinforcing bars is more than 20% of the cross-sectional area, splice replacement bars to existing bars as directed by Kimley-Horn. Remove additional concrete as necessary to provide at least a 0.75 in clearance beyond existing and replacement or supplemental bars. Structural documented the updates with pictures and Kimley-Horn found the splices acceptable. (Reference Photos 3-4) c. More corroded or damaged electrical conduits were observed and shall be repaired/replaced before applying the patching material. Damaged conduits were repaired/replaced by an electrician hired by Best Western. Kimley-Horn requested Structural to provide a letterfrom the electrician taking all the responsibilities for the repair/replace procedure performed on the damaged electrical conduits. It's not the responsibility of Kimley-Horn to inspect nor approved any electrical work performed in this project. (Reference Photos 5-8) d. Reinforcement shall be cleaned and reviewed by Kimley-Horn before applying bonding agents and patching material. Kimley-Horn requested the contractor to provide support chairs,and holding bars properly spaced and with sufficient strength to carry loads of reinforcement and deposited concrete without collapsing or allowing bars to sag.
