Structural and Waterproofing Repairs Kimley -Horn conducted a site visit to observe structural and waterproofing repairs on the Best Western Hotel – Balcony Restoration project . Upon arriving on site, progress work was observed on the NE and NW building blocks. The following observations were noted: a. Surface preparation was observed to be in accordance with the restoration plans and technical specification on spall areas . Reinforcement was cleaned and bonding agent was applied. Kimley -Horn found the steel preparation acceptable to receive patching material. Kimley -Horn requested the contractor to provide additional support chairs in few locations to avoid deposited concrete allowing bars to sag. Chairs were added and approved by Kimley-Horn. (Reference Photos 1-2) b. Structural decided to patch large spall areas with the Supermix pumpable concrete mix design, except the repairs around honeycombing areas identified on previous visits that were still on progress . Kimley-Horn observed that the description on the truck delivery ticked was in compliance with the approved submittals. However, based on the slump tests performed by GFA International it was observed that the slump of the mix exceeded the expected range (7 +/- 2in.) in three of the four tests performed. The contractor decided to proceed with the pour. Concrete was frequently vibrated while poured on repair areas. Structural provided Kimley- Horn with the five-days compressive strength results and all the samples tested exceeded the specified strength of 7000 psi.
