3. PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Basic Uses: DENS -GLASS GOLD gypsum sheathing is used for direct mechanical application
to structural framing as a backing for exterior surfacing, as a wall covering material, or as a soffit
material. DENS -GLASS GOLD gypsum sheathing has been designed as a backerboard for
adhesive application of exterior insulation finish systems. DENS -GLASS GOLD can also be
used with exterior fmish systems without insulation (direct application) below the 4,000 heating
degree days line. (See G-P DENS -GLASS GOLD brochure BuyLine 1752 dated 1/93 for a
complete listing of direct application guidelines.) It is also recommended as an underlayment for
vinyl, stucco, wood, metal, plywood, or board -type sidings, wood shingles or shakes, and stone or
brick veneers. DENS -GLASS GOLD gypsum sheathing, with its unique glass mat facing on the
front and back, provides greater resistance to rain, heat, and wind than regular gypsum
paper -faced sheathing can provide. This increased protection against weather reduces the need to
replace panels due to warping, sagging, or delamination.
Limitations: DENS -GLASS GOLD gypsum sheathing should not be used as a base for nailing
or mechanical fastening. DENS -GLASS GOLD gypsum sheathing should be attached
mechanically to structural framing. Panels should not be installed using staples or adhesives
only. Maximum stud spacing for 1/2" DENS -GLASS GOLD gypsum sheathing is 16" o.c. and
24" o.c. for 5/8" DENS -GLASS GOLD FIRESTOPO Type X. DENS -GLASS GOLD gypsum
sheathing may be stored outside prior to installation if stacked off the ground and under protective
covering.
Composition and Materials: DENS -GLASS GOLD gypsum sheathing is composed of a
proprietary silicone -treated gypsum core, which is noncombustible and dimensionally stable. The
core is an integral part of the inorganic glass mat surfacing on both sides. In addition, the gold
side is coated with a proprietary alkali -resistant surface coating. Together, these materials
provide stability and protection of the structural framing.
Sizes and Shapes:
-Thickness: 1/2" (13mm), 5/8" FIRESTOP Type X (16mm)
4-- • _4
- Widths: 48" (1.22m) standard, tolerance up to -1/8"
- Lengths: 88", 98", and 108" (3.6m) standard, tolerance+/- 1/4"
- Edges: Square
Application Standards: Gypsum core conforms to ASTM C 1177. Application standards are
in accordance with Gypsum Association Publication GA-253 for gypsum sheathing.
4. TECII ICAL DATA
First Hazard Classification: Zero flame spread and zero smoke developed when tested per
ASTM E 84 Tunnel Test Method. Noncombustible when tested in accordance with ASTM E 136.
Fire -Resistance Rating. G-P 5/8" DENS -GLASS GOLD FIRESTOP Type X sheathing
provides a one -hour rating, based on tests in accordance with ASTM E 119 Fire Test.
DENS -GLASS GOLD FIRESTOP Type X is UL classified. Test reports are available upon
request. See table for Technical Data.
Air and Rater Infiltration: With total recommended joint finishing materials and application
methods, DENS -GLASS GOLD passed air and water infiltration tests according to ASTM test
methods:
Test: Air Infiltration
Method: ASTM E 283
Result: Passed
Test: Static Water Penetration;
Method: ASTM E 331
Result: Passed*
*See DGG BuyLine 1752 for specifics. Tested both at 6.24 p.s.f. and 12.0 p.s.f.
5. INSTALLATION
Methods: Edge joints of DENS -GLASS GOLD gypsum sheathing should be parallel to and
occur over framing members, or perpendicular with end joints staggered. Drive fasteners firmly
against and flush with surface of DENS -GLASS GOLD gypsum sheathing; do not countersink.
Fasteners should be located no closer than 3/8" from edges and ends of DENS -GLASS GOLD
gypsum sheathing. Fit DENS -GLASS GOLD gypsum sheathing snugly around all window and
door openings.
DENS -GLASS GOLD gypsum sheathing should be mechanically fastened to the structural
framing with nails or screws., Nails are to be 11 gauge, 7/16" headed galvanized nails. Use
1-1/2" long nails for 1/2" boards and 1-3/4" long nails for 5/8" boards. Nail spacing: 4" o.c. at
perimeter and 8" o.c. in field 'for vertical application or 8" o.c. throughout for horizontal
application. Screws for metal framing are to be No. 6, Type S or S-12, bugle head, self -tapping,
and rust -resistant. Use 1" long screws for 1/2" thick boards and 1-1/4" long screws for 5/8"
boards. Screw spacing for metal framing is: 8" o.c. around perimeter and in the field.
DENS -GLASS GOLD gypsum sheathing may be cut by scoring and breaking, or by sawing, in
either case, working from gold surface. Do not power saw.
Handling Precautions: This product contains fiberglass. Special handling precautions are
advised. For further details; refer to DENS -GLASS GOLD packaging or the product brochure
available from Georgia-Pacific. ,

BUILDING PERMIT NO. 97-020556
Dear Mr. Van Doran:
I have reviewed the architectural plans for the above single family residential construction. Based
upon my review, I herein offer the following documentation:
A. The projected "RIGHT SIDE" elevation has a surface area approximately 785 square feet.
The window openings total 73 square feet, which is about 9.3% of the total wall area.
B. The wall construction will consist of fire rated vinyl siding, Wolverine -Benchmark
Reinforced (UL263) or equal on 5/8" CDX plywood; 2 x 4 studs at 16-inch on -center
spacing; R-11 fiberglass batt insulation and type "X" interior drywall. The above assembly
will meet the 1-hour fire rating requirements.
