Activities Observed:
1. Structural and Waterproofing Repairs
Kimley -Horn conducted a site visit to observe structural and waterproofing repairs on the Best Western
Hotel – Balcony Restoration project . Upon arriving on site, progress work was observed on the South
building. The following observations were noted:
a. Shoring was installed in all areas where repair work was taking place following the approved
shoring shop drawings and recommendations from Kimley -Horn on the previous visit .
b. Progress was observed on the spall areas where delaminated concrete had been removed
and concrete edges sawcut at 90 degrees. Concrete removal and surface preparation were
observed to be in accordance with the restoration plans and technical specification in most
locations. Kimley-Horn identified hollow sound concrete next to existing repairs by tapping with
a hammer. Contractor will address any delaminated area adjacent to the repairs. (Reference

c. Kimley -Horn observed reinforcement damaged by saw cutting the slab. Where section loss of
reinforcing bars is more than 20% of the cross-sectional area or where existing rebar is fully
cut, splice replacement bars to existing bars as directed by Kimley-Horn. Remove additional
concrete as necessary to provide at least a 0.75 in clearance beyond existing and
replacement or supplemental bars. (Reference Photos 3 & 4)
d. Corroded or damaged electrical conduits were repaired/replaced by an electrician hired by
Best Western. It’s not the responsibility of Kimley-Horn to inspect nor approve any electrical
work performed in this project.
e. Existing railing metal connections were damaged in two locations. Kimley-Horn recommended
to connect railing members using metal angles and self -drilling screws.
f. Floor crack repairs were in progress. Most of the crack repairs were found acceptable except
in some locations where the gravity feeding epoxy material had not been grinded. Contractor
marked the locations and Kimley -Horn will review pending crack repairs during the next site
visit. (Reference Photos 5 & 6)
