RE: Equivalence of ASTM E84-13a and ASTM E84-16
Dear Dan:
At your request, I have reviewed an ASTM test method standard to evaluate its equivalence to
the test method standard currently referenced by the Florida Building Code. Specifically, I am
comparing:
ASTM E84-13a Standard Test Method for Surface Burning Characteristics of Building
Materials to ASTM E84-16 Standard Test Method for Surface Burning Characteristics of
Building Materials.
I have reviewed and compared the above -referenced test method standards. Specific changes
noted between the standards include:
• Updated requirements for the photometer measurement system.
• Added specimen preparation and mounting requirements for flexible fibrous glass
insulation used in metal buildings.
The noted changes would not cause different test results or different interpretation of the test, and
h is my professional opinion that the test method standards are equivalent.
Thus, the testing conducted to ASTM E84-13a Standard Test Method for Surface Burning
Characteristics of Building Materials is equivalent to ASTM E84-16 Standard Test Method for
Surface Buming Characteristics of Building Materials and, there for, in compliance with the Florida

Limits of Use:

the product named herein.
This product has been evaluated for use in locations adhering to the current Florida Building Code.
See Installation Instructions D015000, signed and sealed by Hermes F. Norero, P.E. (FL p 73778) for
specific use parameters.
1. This product has been evaluated and is in compliance with the current Florida Building Code,
including the "High Velocity Hurricane Zone" (HVHZ).
2. Product anchors shall be as listed and spaced as shown on details. Anchor embedment into
substrate material shall be beyond wall dressing or stucco.
3. When used in areas requiring wind borne debris protection this door product complies with
Chapter 16 of the current Florida Building Code and does not require an impact resistant
covering on outswing doors.
4. Non -Impact sidelites do require an impact resistant covering when used in areas requiring
wind borne debris protection to comply with Chapter 16 of the current Florida Building Code.
5. Site conditions that deviate from the details of drawing 13015000 require further engineering
analysis by a licensed engineer or registered architect.
